There are times when I watch girls, including my roommate, try to turn their guy friends into something more and I've always wondered why they do it. In my opinion, some guys are just better off to be a friend and nothing more. Here are some reasons:
1. It’s nice to have a guy friend or two and know there's never any pressure.
When a girl realizes that she likes a guy, she thinks that she has to be perfect 24/7. This can put a lot of stress on her — I know it stresses me out. It feels good to have a friend who is a guy to be goofy with and go on random adventures with and be completely imperfect around.
2. Sometimes when guy/girl friendships try to become something more, it can ruin the friendship.
People have the tendency to change their behavior when the label of their relationship with the other person changes. This can ruin the friendship because maybe the guy liked you the way you were before. Maybe he liked how cool you were before you got all caught up in what “couple-y” things you should do next. Since you’ve transformed into a completely different person, how can you expect the friendship to go back to normal?
3. If you date the guy, there is a less chance that you two will be able to go back to being friends after breaking up.
Remember how good of friends you two were before trying to become that perfect couple that everyone always wanted you to be? After whatever nasty chain of events that occurred before you two broke up, do you honestly think that you two could get back together and be perfectly normal again? How many couples do you know who stay friends after breaking up? Not many, so therefore, my point is made.
4. Your mutual friends might feel awkward.
After you and your best guy friend start dating, your group of friends might feel a sense of weirdness when you two are around because now you two are dating and you are no longer just two parts of the group. While constantly being paired together, you sort of become one unit instead of being two normal parts of your friend group and your friends might act differently when you are around. Also, if you two fight, it will cause stress on your mutual friends because they might feel like they have to pick a side.
5. You might find yourself not being as open with your “best friend” anymore if he becomes more.
That person who you used to tell everything to became your boyfriend, and from that point on, everything was different. Someone who you used to tell all your embarrassing moments to, all your boy stories to and more is now more than just your best friend. You might find yourself not feeling as comfortable around him as you used to be. Also, you can’t tell your boyfriend who is also your best friend stuff about himself, can you? Of course not.
All in all, sometimes it is just better to keep your best guy friend as just that: a best friend.
