Being a Rhode Island native, I am more than used to the reoccurring confused look on the faces of people outside of New England that are under the impression that I said "Long Island". Other than the common misconceptions, Rhode Island is seemingly well-known for our sweeping coastline of beaches, historical architecture and state pride. From coffee milk to old lighthouses, here are 5 reasons why Rhode Islanders should be prideful of the smallest state in the country.
1. The Coastline
Whether you are at The Coastguard House looking at the Narragansett towers or are walking alongside the water in Watch Hill, something that is most prominent about Rhode Island culture is the coastline.
2. The Hour Rule
Regardless of if you live in Westerly or in North Scituate, if you are from Rhode Island you know you are able to drive to any location in the state in no more than an hour. (If its been longer than an hour it's considered a road trip). This makes the beaches, city, and rolling farm land easily accessible regardless of where you are.
3. The amazing food.
Federal Hill, Matunuck Oyster Bar, Iggy's Doughboys, Coffee Exchange, Del's... Enough said.
4. Historical Providence
30 minutes form every landmark in Rhode Island, Providence has some of the most historical architecture in the state. Westminister St., RISD, College Hill and most famous, Brown University have been the staple visiting points for tourists nationwide. Writers such as H.P. Lovecraft and Poe have spent countless hours strolling Benefit Street writing some of their most famous works right in the center of the city at the Providence Athenaeum. While Rhode Islanders sometimes do not realize this beautiful space is right in their backyard, during the summertime, the city of Providence flourishes as the Providence Waterfire and outdoor concerts kick in as a perfect way to experience the cities nightlife.
5. COFFEE MILK.
Just try it.
