Every four years we are treated to the Summer Olympics. Few a few weeks, the whole world stops and turns their eyes upon one country while the best athletes from all over the world compete for glory in their sport and glory for their country. I have always loved the Olympics, the summer games particularly. Throughout the duration, any spare minute you will find me camped out in front of the TV, rooting for the USA athletes with all that I am worth. This year, we turn our eyes to Rio and watch our athletes compete for glory. Michael Phelps has returned for his final Olympics, Simone Biles is poised to make history in the Gymnastics arena and the first Refugee team is competing against all odds for personal glory despite their lack of governmental support. It is sure to be an exciting and groundbreaking Olympics and I can't wait to watch along! Here are 5 reasons why the Summer Olympics are the best:
1. Patriotism
Throughout the Olympics, patriotism sweeps through the USA like it is the 4th of July all over again. We all become fans of whatever sport the USA is poised to medal in and cheer on our athletes with fervor. Go USA!!
2. Learning About Unusual Sports
I love watching little-known sports in the Olympics. It is so cool to see people take something unique and choose to be the best. I find these sports so interesting to learn about. They get broadcasted on the world stage for just a few short weeks but I eat it up while it is here.
3. Athletes Stories
I love learning about the athletes who compete. Seeing a gold medalist is great but knowing that person overcame struggles to get there or has some unique stories makes those athletes seem real. Nothing gets me more than a good rags to riches story. This is what makes the refugee team this year so inspiring; those people overcame so much to be where they are today.
4. The Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony of every summer games gives insight into the hosting country. I loved seeing James Bond parachute into the London Games and Gisele Bundchen struts her final runway to open Rio. I love to watch a country take such pride in hosting the Olympic games and go all out to show that to the world.
5. Having Something to Look Forward to Right Before Summer Ends
Summer Olympics give a sweetness to the end of summer. There is something to look forward to all year and the last few weeks before school starts back up and summer days end are spent watching great athletes and cheering on the USA.
Now Gymnastics just came back on and my sweet tea is getting cold. I am diving back into the Summer Olympics and cheering on the USA with all I got! Go USA! I love the Olympics.
