5 Reasons You Shouldn't Overlook The Local Sorority

Local doesn't mean 'bad', it just means different!

When I first went through recruitment my first semester of freshman year, I wanted a sorority with nationals, because what even was local? What made people want to be a part of something they didn't even have anywhere else? From what I was told, they were considered the 'weird girls' of greek life. But as I walked into their house, I felt accepted, appreciated and like I was finally home. The girls I met there were the most down to earth girls I had ever talked to. When I accepted my bid, I got goosebumps because I was so excited to be a part of something so different and unique. There's only one Iota Gamma Upsilon.

1. We Have the Ability to Make and Amend Our Constitution

One of the biggest perks of being local is that the sisters have the ability to chose what values they wish to uphold. Every sister has a voice in how things are ran in order to make sure everyone enjoys their time as a sister. In my sorority, we recently changed our philanthropy to support ovarian cancer, since one of our sisters had recently passed from the disease and we wanted to show our sisterly support.

2. Our House Mom is a Recent Alumni of the same University and Sorority as us

Let's be real. A 24 year old is going to be able to relate to you a lot better than an older woman that may or may not have even attended your university. She knows the deal with everything in the sorority as well as the campus, and sisters feel more comfortable coming to her with issues or even just to talk. She makes sure things are running smoothly, but still likes to have a good time with the younger sisters.

3. We Make Our Own Traditions

This is one of my favorite things about being in a local sorority. The sisters chose what they like and what they don't like, whether it be events or ceremonies, and can change, delete or add to it whenever and to whatever the women decide upon as a sisterhood. They have the ability to start or continue any tradition they think is worthwhile for future sisters, since there is no other sorority like them. They change with the times.

4. We're anything but "Cookie Cutter" Sorority Girls

To be blunt, they are a very diverse. There's a very obvious and apparent acceptance for all women of all different race, religion, background, as well as upbringing. They are impossible to define since no two sisters are exactly alike. They welcome all girls with open arms.

5. We're Self Sustaining

In short, this allows sisters to see exactly where their money is going. There's no fees that go to the people that work for nationals, because there is no nationals. All the money you pay, goes back into the house for events, house upkeep, and philanthropy. Leading to the fact that being in a local sorority is more affordable.

As we like to say, no nationals, no problem. So when you go through recruitment, keep an open mind about where you belong. Trusting the process was one of the best decisions I ever made. Iota Gamma Upsilon is my home, and there's no place I'd rather be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
