Coming from a tiny town in East Texas, I always get the question, "Why did you pick to come here?" when I tell someone that I go to school at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. After a-settling down into the new school year, I am absolutely sure that I made the right choice. I have several reasons as to why I made this decision, but these are my top five:
1. Distance
When I began looking at colleges my junior year of high school, one of the main things I was looking for was a university that was close enough to home that I could drive home when needed, but just far enough that I could feel like I was on my own. Monroe is two and half hours away from my home town and meets all my distance requirements. I love the freedom of being on my own, but it is nice to know that I can always get back home if I need to.
2. Location
Monroe is a great city and has some excellent restaurants, activities and outdoor areas to offer. The university itself has a beautiful bayou running right through campus. If that doesn't make you want to come here, then I am so sorry for you because you are missing out. I love very scenic areas and this campus is just perfect for me.
3. Friends
You might think that attending a college away from home would have made finding friends difficult for me, but that wasn't the case. Although I did not have any friends come with me to college from high-school, it was not hard to make friends here at all. At PREP people are so friendly and almost anyone you walk by on the campus will flash you a smile, and if they don't, just don't sweat it. I mean, we all have our off days.
4. Degree of Choice
I am a pre-pharmacy major and there are not very many schools that offer this degree. It is even harder to find a school that has their own professional pharmacy school that is just a mile off campus. If you are interested in pharmacy, ULM is a great place to get your degree.
5. The Environment
No matter what college you go to, you'll probably find that it has a great environment, but ULM is just feels so fun and safe. As I mentioned, finding friends is easy and dealing with people who aren't your friends isn't hard. Everyone is super nice, and even the professors are nice to you (unlike how everyone says they don't care about you). There are so many opportunities to have a great time here.
I love ULM and #TalonsOut.
