Growing up, parents are commonly seen as the enemy. You feel as if they don’t understand you, are out to get you and want to make your life as miserable as possible. But as I’ve grown older and experienced more, I am proud to say that my parents are my best friends and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
1. They are always there for you.
No matter what time of day, no matter where you are and no matter your age, your parents are always there for you when need be. You are one of their top concerns and priorities and they will always support you and encourage your happiness. As cliché as it is, “friends come and go, but family is forever” is completely true.
2. They've already gone through what you’re going through.
There’s nothing better than getting advice from someone who’s already been in a similar position to yours. Your parents are the perfect example that life goes on and what seems like a huge deal now may not be as important as you think. When I went through a breakup, hearing that my parents experienced the same feelings, got through it and were better off, was exactly what I needed and I couldn’t have received that anywhere else.
3. They love you unconditionally.
Whether you mess up, fail or give up, your parents will still love you. It’s easy to lose other friends because of stupid mistakes or arguments, but your parents will always be on your side. And even when they do get upset with you, you know they still love you no matter what, and that is not guaranteed anywhere else.
4. They have your best interest at heart.
In a world of selfishness, backstabbing and cruelty, it is only safe to assume that you are the only person who has your best interest on their mind. The one exception to this is your parents. As opposed to other friends, they have no reason to exhibit any of those characteristics toward you. They truly want what is best for you, no judgment, no strings attached and no ulterior motives.
5. They know you better than you know yourself.
They’ve known you your entire life. They know how you think, how you speak, your childhood memories, your fears and your dreams. They know when something is wrong and what to do to cheer you up, without you having to tell them. They know how to make you laugh, smile and also when it's best to leave you alone. What more could you ask for?
Having such a close relationship with my parents has been one of the most beneficial things in my life. I can be completely open and honest about anything and everything with them and it has helped me throughout so many situations. Of course I have and cherish my friends who are my own age, but I know that my parents are my true best friends forever.
