I know when I was younger I always wanted to be a singer or even an actress, but as I grew older I realized that the lifestyle for celebrities is nothing close to what we imagine. Now, from all I have seen, heard, and know, I would never want to be famous and here are some reasons why.
1. Wave goodbye to privacy.
Nothing is sacred once you’re famous. You are no longer granted with freedom and alone time. Everything you do can and will be shown to the world. When you gain weight because you’re pregnant, the world will know. When your grocery shopping with your new girlfriend, the world will know. It’s sad to think that celebrities cannot just walk the streets like normal human beings without being bombarded. If becoming famous means I will never have privacy again, I would rather keep my privacy.
2. Say hello to flashing lights.
Not only do pop stars and songwriters love to write about the flashing of the cameras and the hooting of the crowds but, children and even adults dream of what that would be like. However, if you really think about it, it would be very annoying. Imagine a time when you walked into a theme park and someone came up to you with a camera and asked to take your picture. After you have that image now imagine fifty people running up to you snapping your picture, yelling your name so you look at them, when all you wanted to do was go to the theme park. All you wanted to do is relax and have a good time.
3. Fame or famine?
Not only are celebrities daunted by flashing lights and hollering crowds, not only do they hand over their privacy, but they also are pressured to look and act a certain way. In most recent years, the term eating disorder had defined a population of men and women (as well as young boys and girls) that have improper or non-existent eating patterns harmful to the mind and body. According to eatingdisorderhope.com, many celebrities have suffered from both bulimia and anorexia including Paula Abdul, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Princess Diana, and many more. This illness is derived from low self-esteem and a negative self-image which causes people to harm themselves by having this eating disorder and sometimes, like Karen Carpenter, causing them their life.
4. Flight to flight, city to city.
As if having too many people judging you and bothering you all day was not enough, now I cannot just spend time at home either? Nope. In fact, you may have more than one home because of traveling so much. Celebrities usually have a hard time finding time to spend at home, they are almost always traveling. Yes, businessmen and women travel too, but most do not travel to five different cities in the same week, or three different countries in a month. To me, that seems like too much, especially if I wanted to maintain a romantic relationship with someone that cannot come with me every time or if I had little ones at home.
5. It’s a job.
Being a celebrity may seem like a dream, and it is, but you must remember that, just like everybody else in the world, it is their job. They are obligated to go to functions and work on a set or their new album like a regular man or woman would be obligated to show up to their office job. And, just like any other job or career, it is not always easy or fun. There are probably parts of the celebrity jobs that they cannot stand or could do without just like any job. You may like what you do, but not everything about it, which is okay. The main point is, being a celebrity is not all fun and games, you are assigned tasks that need to get done just like the average person, but maybe even with a little more pressure.
So next time you think about how nice it would be to become famous think about all of the things that celebrities go through each day. As an example, A song by Taylor Swift called "The Lucky One" brings the life of the famous into perspective. She sings about a woman who became famous and started slowly regretting the fame she had. Swift's song goes on to explain that the woman decided to end her career which Swift is first confused about, just like any of us would be, and then later Swift sings the lyrics "And it took some time, but I understand it now. ‘Cause now my name is up in lights, but I think you got it right." This is showing that Swift realized that being a celebrity is not all it's cracked up to be.Truthfully, I feel bad for celebrities because they are looked up to as these people that need to be perfect, but the average person forgets, they are an average person, just like everybody else. The only thing that is different is their career choice.
