Well if you haven't guessed it yet, yup I was in the womb with my identical twin. And to think most people are in the womb alone, can you imagine sharing that tiny space and limited food with another human being? #Miracle To be honest, I don't know what it's like to not share my birthday, have the same last name on every roster, or be asked 345839 a day if we are twins in addition to the countless number of stares.
With the annoyance comes the biggest blessing in the entire universe. I am extremely grateful that I was blessed with a sidekick because I know how rare it is and possibly dangerous. So with that, here are the best things that come from being an identical twin.
1. You are never alone.
I briefly touched on this, but I have been cursed with a disease called an introverted extrovert. I enjoy being alone but I also crave the energy from big crowds. Having a twin is a blessing to pull me out of the house and leave the half-eaten ice cream carton behind. It's like having a built-in best friend who can say how rude you're being without completely ditching you...well, I haven't been ditched yet.
2. You can share clothes for life.
Luckily, my sister and I wear the same clothes size and shoe size, which made school shopping a simple task for our parents. We shared everything growing up because it was just the norm. We honestly didn't know anything different. I won't openly admit to who takes whose clothes but I often find myself without a full closet and running to find an outfit to wear. I think I'd rather have a half full closet than live a life without a twin sister.
3. We have become people pleasers.
You know these people who can't make a decision on where to eat and then the frustration leads to a Chipotle burrito bowl on the couch watching "Fixer Upper"? Yup, you guessed it. As a result of not having alone time, we have learned how to roll with the punches/decisions. If you have spent time with the two of us together you will find we usually repeat the predictable "I don't care, whatever you want". I guess you could say we aim to just make a decision and suffer the negative consequences. It's still a work in progress.
4. Having someone who knows your every facial expression and what you are thinking.
Twin telepathy is bogus and made up by someone who wants twins to suffer through that question daily. And while we are at it, no I don't feel my sister's pain. The reason my sister and I know each other well is because we have been raised in the same environment for the past twenty-two years plus an additional nine months. We have experienced more things alike than different, so we don't know anything different. One thing we are professionals at is reading each other's facial expressions. Just like you can tell what your family is thinking, we know when the other is thinking it's time to leave.
5. It's nice to have someone deal with all the twin remarks.
Whenever someone asks if we are twins always comes with a story about how their friend's cousin's uncle is a twin. And I bet my name has come up when one of my family friend's meets a set of twins. One thing I have to tell you is there is nothing different about a twin and a single child. We are all people with four limbs, a brain, and a heart. Do I consider myself unbelievably lucky to have a twin? Heck yeah. But it doesn't make me more or less important than anyone else. All I'm saying is if you think they are twins, they probably are and have already been asked 45336 times on that given day.
