As all college students know, living away from home can be the greatest and also the worst. You're finally free -- free to go out when you want, eat what you want (freshman 15 is no joke), and stay up all night watching Netflix. The only problem with this seemingly charmed new life is all of the decisions that go with it.
Living alone can be hard and, let's be honest, exhausting. Having to constantly decide where to go, what to have for dinner, whether you should go to class or not (the answer is always no), is the worst. So when those breaks come around, we all run home to the sweet bliss of life being taken care of for us. So whether you're already home or you're counting down the days until your next visit, here are some things to look forward to.
1. Sleeping In Your Own Bed
Sure, your dorm is probably nice (really, I'm sure it is). If you're really cool, you probably decorated it like those awesome IKEA catalogs, but nothing, nothing, beats your room at home. The comfort of being able to throw your clothes all over the floor, take as long as you want in the bathroom in the morning (your siblings can wait, you need this), not being woken by your roommates stumbling in at 2 a.m., or from their 50 alarms in the morning, is really priceless.
2. Free Laundry
If you're lucky, your parents will have missed you so much and will be so happy you're home that they'll take your laundry and do it for you. Not all of us can be so lucky, though. Either way, doing your laundry at home is an almost bearable task compared to doing it at school. When you're at home, there's no dragging your laundry up and down from the laundry room, no waiting in line for an open dryer. You never having to go through the eternal struggle of deciding whether you should just take that person's stuff out of the machine. I mean it's been there for an hour already! Doing laundry at home is basically hassle free, except, well, having to actually do it.
3. Seeing Your Friends From Home
Most likely, you and all of your friends split ways after high school. You left each other begrudgingly, but full of promises of Skype dates and daily phone calls, only to realize a week into college that that was never going to happen. But that just makes your reunions all the better. When you and your crew get back together, it's like no time has passed at all.
4. A Fully Stocked Fridge
Truly, one of the best parts of coming home is the food, all the food. No more budgeting, no more getting your vitamins from Vitamin Water, and definitely no more Ramen. If you want a snack while you're home, all you have to do is walk down the stairs: the cabinets and fridge are just sitting there waiting for you to empty them completely. There really is nothing more satisfying than home cooked food, and being met by all of your favorites as you walk through the door is so beautiful you could almost cry.
5. Your Family
Oh right, the reason you're coming home in the first place! Those first ten minutes of being home are the best: everyone is so happy to see you, hugs and kisses all around. But then those ten minutes end and it's, "Why don't you have a boyfriend?", "Are you exercising enough or at all?", "We all share a Netflix account, we see how much you're watching. Do you even go to class?" You let out a sigh of repressed exasperation and you know you're really home.
It's time we were all honest -- home is where it's at. Every time you have to pack up and go back to school, you wonder why you ever thought it was a good idea to leave. Forget freedom, and growing up, I think I'll stay at home forever. Wait, did I just hear my mom ask why I was out so late last night? On second thought maybe I'll go back to school.
