I never thought I would be able to have a pet in college, but this year I decided to be spontaneous and adopt a cat (his name is Milo). This cat has probably been one of the best decisions I've ever made. When I get to spend time with him, it brings a whole lot of joy inside of my heart. So here are some reasons why having a pet in college is crucial.
1. It's a stress reliever.
It's been scientifically proven that pets reduce stress so just think if you had one permanently living with you. When I hang out with Milo, I honestly forget about everything else that's going on. It's the best way to forget about the stressful life of school and just relax for a little bit. And I think we can all agree that we need a break every once in a while.
2. It keeps you company.
College can be very lonely even when you're with your friends. In those times when you feel like your world is falling apart, having a pet by your side will make everything seem a lot less dramatic. You'll always have someone to talk to, someone to watch TV with, and someone to cuddle with.
3. It's entertaining.
Now I'm not saying that college within it self is boring, but when you add a pet to the equation, the party gets even better. You need a good laugh and nothing beats getting that laugh from something stupid your pet does. They make life fun.
4. It's a learning experience.
Having a pet teaches you responsibility. And responsibility gets you better grades, right? You want the best future for your pet so that's just an incentive to try harder. If you do better in school, you might just be able to give your pet the best of best in toys and food. Not only will that make you feel accomplished, but your pet will be so proud of you.
5. Even if you aren't doing great in school, they'll stay by your side.
They won't get mad at you for failing all your midterms or forgetting to turn in your homework assignment. They won't get mad at you for just wanting to sleep when you haven't slept in a week. They'll listen to your complaining and they'll be there through all the frustration that life brings. They'll love on you when you need it the most and won't ever disappoint you.
I truly believe that if you have the chance to own a pet, college is the perfect time to do it. Be spontaneous and adopt something. Whether it be a cat, dog, bird, hamster or even a snake, they'll all bring you joy. But don't forget that it's important to give them the time and attention they deserve.
