5 Reasons Most Girls THRIVE In College

If you are anything like me, then going away to a university is something you spent endless nights dreaming about. The idea of change and the opportunity to reinvent yourself is calling your name.

Girls truly live their best years in college. It is an opportunity for many new beginnings. College is the ultimate game changer for girls.

1. New Friends

Before you all go off to college you might remember sitting in a circle with all of your best friends from high school and swearing, “we’ll always have each other." For some, this might be true, but when you all go to separate colleges people often grow apart because college life is hectic. However, what people forget to tell you is that it is absolutely OK. College grants you the opportunity to surround yourself with anyone you want to. You have the chance to meet new people and make entirely new memories. Your new friends are the ones you go through the process with while you're adjusting to moving away from everything you’ve ever known. Just because you are meeting new people and not staying in touch as much does not mean you don’t care about the people you grew up with. It simply means you are choosing to let go of anyone and anything that isn’t contributing to your growth.

2. Study something you love

Let’s be honest, high school classes are boring because you are forced to take classes that fit the school’s curriculum. You sit through each class twiddling your thumbs and praying the clock on the wall will speed up. However, college allows you to explore and take classes that interest you. Not only do you get to study something that you’re passionate about, but you get to kick ass at it.

3. Fresh start

The best part about college is the fresh start. Most likely, nobody knows you and you don’t know anyone either. There is no one to hold you accountable for who you were; they can only see who you choose to be now.

4. Living on your own

Living on your own is stressful, but it is also amazing. Every day can turn into an adventure when you are able to live with your best friends. It's your own house, so you get to make your own rules. Talk about avoiding mental breakdowns by having endless wine nights with your roommates!

5. Being unapologetically selfish

The main reason why girls thrive in college is that they are unapologetically selfish. This is the perfect time to focus on you and becoming the best version of you. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t care about the people around you. However, this is the time to put your dreams and your goals first instead of focusing on what everyone else wants you to do. If you hate a class, then you can drop it. If you don’t like the way you’re living, you can change it. If the guy that you’re with isn’t treating you right, then get rid of him. There are plenty of them out there or even better you can just take some time to focus on you. However you choose to do it the best thing you can do while in college is focus on what you want for yourself and how you are going to make it happen.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
