5 Reasons Why I'm Excited To Be Back At College

As happy as I was to be home for Winter Break, I still anticipated returning to the Hill after a solid first semester and looked forward to Jan Plan and second semester. Listed below are five reasons why I’m excited to be back at Colby:

1. Second Part of Freshman Year

Class of 2019, we are no longer first semester freshmen! We have made new friends, know what times are the best to frequent each dining hall, know what is expected of us academically, and (most likely) know our way around the campus.

2. Jan Plan

Not only am I excited to take one class, but I am also glad to take a class in a field unrelated to what I plan to study in. This is a good opportunity for me to branch out academically before settling into courses required for my major.

3. Maine Weather

Now don’t get me wrong! While sub-zero temperatures are not my favorite, I do appreciate the opportunity we have at Colby to experience each season in all its glory. It’s hard to know what to expect with Maine weather. One day we could wake up to a dusting of snow, and the next day it could be 60 degrees and sunny outside.

4. New Classes

I don’t know about you, but there is at least one class that I won’t miss second semester. With the second half of the year comes new classes! Next semester we have yet another opportunity to take advantage of our liberal arts education and take a course in a field that we may not know much about.

5. New Adventures

Through watching the sunset from the top of Cadillac Mountain, doing yoga for COOT on the Belgrade Lakes, exploring Waterville, and learning more about what Maine has to offer made for an exciting first semester of college for me. With one semester behind us and seven more remaining, we have the chance every day to make new adventures.

Writing lists such as this one allows for me to remember the blessings I have and better understand why I like a particular thing or discover what interests me. While no one’s first year of college (or any year for that matter) is all sunshine and rainbows, there are moments, even small ones, that we treasure and can fondly look back upon in the years to come.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
