If given the opportunity, every college student should definitely take advantage of the study abroad programs available to them. Most people will talk about how much they would love to live in another country for a few months, but then, later on, make excuses as to why they would never actually go. They'll say it's too expensive, they could never be away from their friends and family for that long, they're too nervous, it'll prevent them from graduating on time, etc. The list goes on and on with reasons why people who really want to study abroad never end up going, but here are 5 reasons why no matter what your doubts are, you should take the leap and follow your dreams.
1. You'll come back feeling more confident than ever.
Before I left to study abroad, I had never left the country, I had never lived on my own and I had never even been on a plane. My flight to London was my first flight ever. During the four months I was abroad, I surprised myself and I did things I never knew I was capable of handling on my own. I learned to have more confidence in myself and my abilities. Because of all my experiences abroad, I now feel like I can take on anything.
2. You'll make new lifelong friends.
Going abroad, I didn't know anyone in my program. I had no idea who I would be living with or attending my classes with. As nervous as I was, I soon learned that I had nothing to be worried about. I met the most interesting people from all around the country and the globe. I had the opportunity to establish great friendships that I know will last a lifetime. I'm even going to be a bridesmaid in one of my new friends' wedding!
3. You'll get to do a lot more traveling than you think you will.
Once I was in Europe, I realized just how close everything is to each other. Mostly everywhere you want to travel to in Europe is only a quick train ride or flight away! Also, prices are really affordable (thank you, Ryanair) so you can explore the continent without going broke! I was able to travel to many more places than I expected to because of how close and affordable everything was.
4. You'll learn a lot about yourself.
While abroad, I learned so much about both the world and myself; whether it was a new kind of food I like, a hobby I enjoy or the way I would handle a particular situation. I grew so much as a person and am a better person because of my experience abroad.
5. Overall, it will change your life.
My time abroad was the best few months of my life. I got to live in a city I always dreamed about visiting, traveled to multiple other cities, made new friends and a lifetime of amazing memories, and grew as a person. I miss it each and every day and I can't wait to return.
So, moral of the story: if you're thinking about studying abroad, do it!
