People can weigh you down, it's sad but true. Whether it be a best friend, significant other or even a family member, the negative people in your life will only bring you into a deeper darker hole and you should be set free of that. Sometimes you don't even realize you're in such a toxic relationship until that person leaves. A negative relationship honestly is sometimes hard to see, but here are some signs you might have to drop that person in your life.
1. This person makes you cut all ties you have with other people.
Whether this is other friends or family, being with someone who makes you just drop other important people in your life for them isn't okay. It's not healthy to just rely on one person for anything. This person may want you all to themselves but how is that fair to you? What happens when this relationship ends? You'll be alone. Being alone is okay, but you shouldn't be alone if you don't have to be.
2. They tell you that you won't be able to make a friend like them or someone won't be able to make you as happy as they made you.
First things first, that's a crock of lies. There are millions of people in this world and someone will make you happy without having to make themselves feel bigger by making you feel like they're the only ones capable of that. A friend, lover or family member should make you feel safe, not trapped.
3. Whatever you tell this person in confidence ends up being used against you in arguments.
This is a big one. When we trust someone so much we tell them things we'd never tell anyone else. You want this person to care for you and be there for you. However, it all backfires when you're in a fight and they use your insecurities as ammunition. This isn't healthy. You don't need someone who uses your flaws against you. Be with someone who is sensitive to you and how you feel. You shouldn't make yourself feel smaller just for the affection of someone else.
4. You guys spend literally every waking moment together.
As humans, we are born into a world where we're nurtured from birth up until we decide to go out on our own. We naturally have the instinct to rely on people. Sometimes this isn't a bad thing, but it's not healthy. You should not feel the need to rely on someone for everything. If it feels like you were punched in the face when that person leaves you, it's not okay. You should be able to function on your own.
5. You need to change yourself to make the person you're with happy.
This is big. You shouldn't have to change anything about yourself to make the person you love happy. You stay just the way you are. If they can't appreciate you, they weren't meant for you.
In life, we meet a lot of people, and a lot of times we want this person to stay in our lives for the long haul. We will want this so bad that we let ourselves go through all of these toxic relationships just to not feel alone. You don't need this. Not every relationship is a toxic one. Do not let yourself settle for one either. You deserve to be as happy as you can be.
