The new year is here and with it a thousand and one resolutions are starting their course. Of course, creating new habits and breaking old ones can be difficult, but don't worry, as someone who's made hundreds of resolutions time and time again, realistic and fantastic, I've got your back. Here are 5 realistic ways you can keep your New Year's Resolutions (yes, even the one about going to the gym).
1. Start Small
Resolutions can be overwhelming, especially because many individuals seem to think they have to get it right the first time around. Ideally, we all want to change overnight, but realistically, it takes time. Think about it, you don't start off running when you're born-you start off crawling. But eventually, as you get stronger and more coordinated, you move from crawling to walking, then from walking to running. It's the same with resolutions; you need to build up to it.
2. Make Goals
This goes along with the first point. With each resolution, make a list of goals to hit in order to complete it. For instance, if your resolution is to be more adventurous, you could make a list of three new activities to try every month. This can keep you from getting easily overwhelmed by the thing you want to complete. Before you know it, you'll have crossed off that resolution from your list.
3. Treat Yourself
As you reach each goal, treat yourself with something small. It will keep you from getting burned out and give you something to look forward to!. Reached your first weight loss goal? Go on and buy that new video game! Went a month without splurging online? Eat some pizza! As long as you don't sabotage your progress, go ahead and celebrate a little!
4. Have a Friend Keep You Accountable
The easiest way I have found to keep my resolutions is to ask a close friend to keep me accountable. Not only will they motivate you to keep going, but they'll provide that loving smack on the head if you even think of giving up. Bonus points if you can get them to take up the resolution as well.
5. Give Yourself A Break
Creating new habits and breaking old ones are hard work so don't get too frustrated if things don't change over night. Just keep taking those steps and meeting your goals and before you know it, the year will be over and you'll have knocked off something from your list. You got this.
