5 Questions You Dont Want To Answer This Thanksgiving Break

All college students are anticipating the questions their family is going to ask them when they come home for Thanksgiving break. Here are five questions you definitely don't want to be asked:

1. How are your classes?

How are my classes? HAHA, so funny you ask. Do you want me just say “Good” or do you actually want to know how I get about three hours of sleep a night to juggle all the assignments I have? I study for about 12 hours a day and still feel like my test is in another language. My professors don’t speak English or don’t speak loud enough. Sometimes I consider dropping out and becoming a telephone operator but since my classes are going “Good” you should not be concerned for me.

2. Is it really that hard?

No, I just find so much joy in complaining about everything, enough joy to fill my eyes with tears actually. YES, it is that hard! This is not like “When I was in college…” Welcome to 2016, where college is no walk in the park and teachers don’t care how much time and effort you put into your studies if they don’t see the results on the exam. Getting a 70 is a blessing and getting an 80 is a miracle! You know it's hard when your motto is “C’s get degrees!”

3. Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?

So, I’m not quite sure why you asked me this ridiculous question but I have a ridiculous response to share with you. NO, no and no! I do not have a love interest because I am currently engaged to my textbook and having an affair with Quizlet. With classes all day every day and enough homework to kill a rainforest, who would have time to go out and meet someone that they could potentially fall in love with? There is truly no time to dedicate to a relationship, I barely have time to take a shower (which could be another reason why I don’t have a boyfriend).

4. Have you been eating healthy?

Could you define healthy for me? If you mean, “Do you only have four scoops of ice cream instead of five?” because if that is what you are asking then the answer is YES! But otherwise no! My dining hall is open 24/7 and the salad bar is not what I’m craving at midnight after studying my life away. Pizza, French fries, Lucky Charms and quesadillas are always on the menu. And to answer your next question, YES! I did gain weight. Stress eating will do that to a college student, now will you please pass the mashed potatoes!

5. What do you do for fun?

Fun? I haven’t had that in a while, but I know I get a warm fuzzy feeling inside when I get to climb in bed before 3 a.m. on a Monday night or treat myself to an episode of my favorite Netflix series. Sad isn’t it? That, that is what I do for fun. Sometimes I’ll go to a campus event and paint a picture of my cat or watch a soccer game with my friends, but that is the extent of the fun I have been having. But don’t get me wrong, reading 400 pages of my micro textbook is kind of fun!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
