5 Questions People Ask When Having a Twin

Having siblings can be the coolest and possibly most aggravating thing ever. Since the day my sister and I were born, we or my parents got flooded with tons of typical youngster comments like “AWES” and “You look so much alike!”

Yes, we are twins. Yes, we tend to look alike.

However my sister and I are fraternal and were born 47 minutes apart. SURPRISE, we will have some similarities.

Do ya’ll ever switch classes? THAT’LL BE SO COOL.

This question never gets old. Being a twin comes with this temptation. In high school, we took most of the same classes, dealing with almost all of the same teachers. So when assignments came along, or tests got passed back, sometimes unknowingly, teachers would pass back my sister’s test paper and vice versa. We would just giggle to each other and switch papers back. When college came around, we each found a major that spoke to us; Toxicology for me and Psychology for her. Now this gave us no room to switch classes or try and fool teachers. We both knew that I would not want to be taking a Developmental Psychology class, and she would not want to be taking Organic Chemistry.

Do Ya’ll Have the Same Friends?

So, we get this question. A LOT. Rebecca and I went to the same high school, with it being quite smaller than many others. We had all of our classes together--give or take a few. So for the most part, we did the same activities together, hung out with the same people, even shared a car and worked the same job for a while. Coming to college was a new experience for us. Even though we attend the same college, we chose different majors, and chose to be involved in different organizations. Rebecca and I are two very different personalities with some common interests on campus. For instance, we both are a part of the Honors Program, and we know a few of the same people from high school that came to ULM. But we are also two different people with two different personalities. So yes, we have some of the same friends, but we have learned that we are not going to always hang out with the same people or do the same activities, and that’s okay.

Is Sharing Clothes a Thing?

This is totally a reoccurring thing. Sometimes we don't always bring that tank top or extra shirt that we need. First step? Go to your sister’s closet. It may not be the color you want, but most likely it will be the same size, and that’s all you need. Just grab and go. Naturally, you both just borrow stuff from each other’s closet and “eventually” give it back.

Can ya’ll read each other’s minds?

This one is always amusing. If you have a sibling, you know that you sometimes mimic or copy your brother or sister just to annoy them or to be funny. Being around your brother or sister a lot means that you tend to say the same things at the same time, occasionally. Rebecca and I have made that a habit over the years. Not that we mean to, it’s just engrained in us. It used to be one of those “annoying twin things," but now it’s just more for laughs.

What Makes You Different?

Rebecca and I may be twins, but we are two completely different people. She is artistic, calm, and a beautiful free spirit. I am organized, usually stressed out about nothing, and a people person. But that also means, at the end of the day, we would do anything for each other, despite our different ways of thinking. She would be the first person I would call if something went horribly wrong on an Organic test, or if I locked myself out of my car before work (it’s happened a lot). A sibling in general is one the greatest blessings. Every day I wake up thankful for the time we are able to spend together even if our lives will eventually go two separate ways.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
