Summer break is happily welcomed by every college student; it's a time to unwind after a busy school year. While it's important to have time to relax, summer break is a great time to be productive. The distraction and time constraint of school vanishes, which allows for focus to be turned to other things. Here are 5 productive things for college students to do over summer break.

1. Fix up your resume

Having a strong resume is important for every college student when applying for jobs or internships. However, resume upkeeping is often put off until it's time to start applying for new opportunities. Summer is the perfect time to update your work experience and really polish up your resume.

2. Give back to your community

Volunteering is a valuable experience; It's a great way to help people in need and learn more about others and yourself. Check out local nonprofits and try to volunteer for them a few times over the summer. If you are unsure about volunteering, do service work for an area you're passionate about.

3. Get an internship

Summer internships don't just have to be full-time, paid opportunities at corporations; many smaller businesses are also seeking interns. See if anyone needs an intern or ask if you can job shadow someone in a career you're interested in.

4. Read a book

People often associate reading with schoolwork, leading many to never pick up a book for leisure. Reading keeps your mind sharp and can be fun, so aim to read a few books during your summer break.

5. Research a topic you want to learn more about

Sometimes, colleges don't offer classes in everything you're passionate about. Or, maybe you want to learn more about something but don't have time to take a class on it. Learn something fun this summer on your own time and without the pressure of exams and assignments.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
