Anyone who knows me well knows that I was not always very enthusiastic about having a younger sister. I am almost 21 years old and to this day my parents tell me about the temper tantrum I threw in Toys R' Us the day my sister was born because I wanted a toy for myself and not my newborn sibling. While it may have taken me a few years to get used to the idea of no longer being an only child, now I could not be more thankful for the fact that my parents decided to reproduce one more time after having me.
Siblings will always have their ups and downs, but I think that anyone else with a sister will be able to understand these perks.
1. There's someone to hide in the corner with at family gatherings.
If anyone wants to find my sister and I at family parties, we are normally hiding somewhere by the food and trying to avoid making casual small talk with others. Siblings come in handy when it comes to this, because not only do you always look busy, you also have someone to make you laugh and help the time pass by quicker.
2. You always have a second closet at your disposal.
Everyone says that one of the best parts about living in a sorority house is being able to share all of your sorority sisters' clothes. While I do agree, I am also able to share my actual sister's clothes at home. "My closet is your closet" is our motto, and as long as we ask for each other's permission first, we normally have no issue lending each other our favorite items of clothing.
3. You can be as weird as you want around your sister and she still has to love you.
That's the best part about family, right? They love you no matter what, and my sister will agree that I tend to abuse this one. I body slam into my sister, talk gibberish to her, and make really weird noises for no reason. While some people would think I was a weirdo and not associate with me, my sister has to love me no matter what, so she puts up with it and just rolls her eyes at me.
4. Your sister is really the only one who understands all of your family drama.
You can try to vent to your friends about your family problems as much as you want, but your sister's the only one who's actually been through it all with you. They understand your family's quirks and issues, and they are able to laugh at it, just as much as you do.
5. A bond you have with a sister is unlike any bond you could ever have with a friend.
They are your family and they will always be a big part of your life. While siblings are bound to fight from time to time, the key is appreciating your sister and the bond that you have and making the most out of the time you spend together.
Dedicated to my wacky sister Marisa. Regardless of how much you want to punch me sometimes, just know that I love you and will always be here for you!
