There are some exciting new titles coming to the shelves of your local bookstore this year. New installments from our favorite authors, imaginative plotlines, and even innovative ideas coming from breakout debut authors. And while there are many more than just five new novels to be excited about, I rounded up a few that I think will really knock the socks off readers of all ages and interests.
1. "History Is All You Left Me" by Adam Silvera.
After receiving several book awards for his 2015 novel, "More Happy Than Not," Adam Silvera is back with a new heartbreaking and inspiring story. Griffin is still reeling from the loss of his ex-boyfriend, Theo, when he meets Jackson, who had been dating Theo until the accident. Thrown into a confusing relationship, Griffin tries to overcome overwhelming grief. This novel promises to be a tearjerker for sure, but one we will all be at the edges of our seats to read.
2. "Difficult Women" by Roxane Gay.
Many know Roxane Gay for her collection of essays entitled, "Bad Feminist." However, this time around, she's taking a break from the politics and focusing on the storytelling. The book features several short stories detailing the lives of American women and their different experiences.
3. "Strange the Dreamer" by Laina Taylor.
Fans of Liana Taylor's previous series, "Daughter of Smoke and Bone," are sure to appreciate the twists and turns that this exciting new story brings to the table. The novel follows Lazlo, an orphan and junior librarian, as his world is turned upside down. Soon, he's journeying around the world, hot on the heels of a hero called Godslayer. His journey brings him to a place called the Weep, where he's put on the case to solve a 200-year-old mystery.
4. "4321" by Paul Auster.
Recently, we've seen quite a few authors play with the idea of multiple story and timelines within a singular or layered plot. However, Auster brings a new element to this idea. "4321" is the story of four different Archibald Isaac Fergusons, all from different timelines. Strangely, in each one, Archibald crosses paths with Amy Schneiderman. The stories unravel, each somehow connected to the next.
5. "Carve the Mark" by Veronica Roth.
Veronica Roth is back, hot off the success of the "Divergent" series. Her next duology takes a leap onto another planet, where everyone is given a 'currentgift.' These currentgifts act as special powers to help the people of this world shape their lives, but can sometimes turn destructive and unstable. Such is the case for Akos and Cyra, who run into trouble protecting themselves from enemies. The two set off on an adventure to protect themselves and those close to them while also learning to work with their frustrating abilities.
Every year, there are a few books that truly reach out and grab us. They captivate, inspire, and have the power to transport us to an entirely different world. Hopefully, some of these titles will be able to fill those extremely large shoes.
