Another year has come and gone and we've reached a time many consider to be a fresh start. But, why is so much focus put on changing outwardly when there is so much more to people than appearance? Keep reading for five ways you can work on yourself this year that have nothing to do with how you look.

1) Read more

When was the last time you cracked open a book? With so much entertainment at our fingertips the written word can sometimes fall to the wayside. Although there's no harm in catching up on your favorite Netflix series, there's nothing quite like a good book. Make 2017 the year you discover, or rediscover, a love of reading. Whether you start with an old favorite or pick something new, there's something out there for everyone.

2) Drink more water

Staying hydrated is incredibly important. Aside from just keeping you alive, drinking enough water can be a game changer in a lot of other ways too. For example, staying hydrated not only keeps you in a better mood, but also prevents headaches and improves skin texture. Try to drink at least 8 glasses a day in 2017 to be on top of your game both physically and mentally.

3) Help others

The holiday season is notorious for being a time of giving. But as we reflect back on 2016 it isn't hard to see that the world could do with a little more kindness. If you care about a cause be active in supporting it. Make an effort to educate yourself and do tangible work to improve the world around you. Make 2017 a year of change. Donate to a charity, volunteer, or do something kind for a stranger. Be the kindest version of "you" you can be.

4) Try something new

The phrase "new year new me" is a mantra for many come each January. But this year remember that you don't need to totally reinvent yourself to do something new. Taking a step outside of your routine could be as simple as joining a book club, taking up knitting, or eating a new kind of food. Change doesn't need to be revolutionary to be exciting. Be as gradual or as drastic as you want. Just be safe, explore, grow, and have fun!

5) Love yourself

New Years resolutions can feel like a lot of pressure. Too many focus on the monetization of insecurities. Don't let this time of year sabotage your self-image. If there is one thing you should strive toward this year it's loving yourself. Don't hinge your self worth on a silly New Year's resolution. It is ok to stumble and fall and moreover: it's ok to be happy with the person you are right now. Make changes for yourself and no one else.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
