Ann Arbor may seem like a small city to those from New York City or Los Angeles, but in reality it could take you years to explore all of downtown.
Being a proud Ann Arborite for the past 20 or so years, these are the first five places I recommend to newcomers and locals alike.
1. Jolly Pumpkin Brewery
If you're looking for a great lunch or casual dinner spot, this is one of my faves. A relaxed environment, always cool but not too frigid in the summer, Jolly Pumpkin is always a crowd-pleaser.
Besides the bacon and brie burger from Sava's (the ultimate burger Holy Grail), these burgers come in as an almost equal second. But what's even better than the burgers is what comes with them: truffle fries. I could honestly eat these with every meal for the rest of my life and die overjoyed. I would probably only make it another ten years eating these for every meal, but I think it could be justified once you try these.
Their pizzas are also great and their salads are unique and fresh as well. Your parents or lucky legal friends will enjoy their locally brewed craft beers.
2. Rock Paper Scissors
This might just be the cutest shop I've ever seen. Mainly known for nice cards, stationary, and small gifts that would make any mom proud to receive, I could spend hours in this shop.
They have a great variety of gifts that can be monogrammed or engraved, Kate Spade's line of smaller accessories (I got my agenda here), and cute Michigan-spirited finds. A must stop when your mom comes to visit or you need a last minute gift for a close friend.
3. The Gandy Dancer
A lesser known upscale restaurant to students, this classy establishment lies off the beaten path (aka not Main Street). When most people want to have a special night dining out, they think of mainly Main Street Ventures; however I think that this place rivals all.
Their Sunday brunch buffet is to die for and their salmon is simply amazing. Their plates are never overdone, and the specials always incorporate a traditional dish with a new spin. We definitely were ahead of the game when we went for senior prom.
4. Cherry Republic
This store just came to Ann Arbor last year, but it's been around up north for over a decade. Started in Northern Michigan, I have frequented their store during summers growing up when visiting my grandparents in Glen Arbor. (There's also a more well-known location in Traverse City.)
Every item they sell is centered around Michigan cherries. My favorites include their white chocolate covered cherries, their hot cherry salsa, and cherry gummy sours. Plus: so many free samples!
5. Pitaya
For freshman girls that have just arrived, I'm certain that Pitaya will become your go-to for going out attire, date party dresses, and a pick me up shopping trip after your first calc exam (we've all been there). Super affordable and on trend, it's kind of equivalent to Ann Arbor's own Forever 21, but a lot better.
