The 5 Most Important Lessons I Learned During the First Semester of College
  1. You don’t have to go out every night. The first week of college was completely overwhelming. There were frat parties every night, and I thought that if I didn’t go out with my pledge class that I would be left behind while everyone else made their best friends for life. After the first week of hardly any sleep, I got really sick. I had to say “no” to going out, and surprisingly enough, the world kept turning. No one thought any less of me, and I had a blast watching Netflix in my bed. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to go to parties every night, because parties aren’t necessarily where you will find the girls you want to spend the next four years with. Resting is so important, especially at this time in your life when you are faced with so may new and exciting things. It’s ok to say “no” to going out.
  2. Reach out to people. Though it’s important to not feel pressure to go out every night, it is also important to continue to reach out to people and make an effort to make friends. Coffee dates, lunch between classes, and studying in the library are all really great ways to get to know someone one-on-one. It’s important to let others get to know you in a setting other than a loud party or bar. Friends won’t just fall into your lap — getting to know others has to be a conscious effort, because unlike high school, you aren’t stuck in a school building for seven hours with the same people. Make sure that you put yourself out there and choose to get to know others.
  3. School comes first. This is a big one. Freshman year is so fun because you are meeting so many new people and experiencing new things, and classes are generally pretty easy since most people have general education courses. But you have to focus. Go to class, study, and make sure you are talking to your teachers if you don’t understand something. I promise, you don’t want to be freaking out when finals roll around and you have to make over a 95 on the test for an A in the class. If you do your best during the semester, then you will be proud of your grades when finals are over, but it’s a pretty terrible feeling to know that you could have worked harder and done better.
  4. Call your parents. College has been so full of new experiences so far, most good and some hard things. My parents have been an anchor for me when everything around me has changed. Sometimes I just need to hear them say that they miss me and that they are proud of me. Don’t be afraid to be honest with your parents. If you are struggling, they will know exactly what to say to cheer you up because let’s face it, our parents know us pretty dang well. They want to hear from you, they want to know how you are. So call them!!
  5. Be productive. A busy person is a happy person. Though laying in bed watching Netflix for hours on end sounds great, it can promote laziness and apathy. If I feel lonely or sad, it’s usually following an extended amount of time spent in my dorm alone doing nothing. It’s so much easier to focus on the negative feelings you have when you are getting nothing done. An easy way to combat this is simply to get out of your dorm! Go workout, go grocery shopping, go to the library, go get your nails done, or go shopping. You feel more balanced when you are productive, which promotes happier thoughts and feelings.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
