Even though I went away from college, I do miss the Bronx. There is literally nothing like it. It taught me how to stand up for myself, and most importantly, there is ALWAYS a way back home.
Here are some things that I have learned from growing up in the Bronx!
1. Don't be afraid to voice your opinion!
Everyone is loud around here. It is normal to hear people play music and hang out outside at three in the morning. Sometimes the noise is too much. Don't be afraid to speak up. We love arguing over anything as long as there is a conversation taking place.
2. There are more things to do other than attending a Yankee Game at the stadium.
Everyone here loves the Yankees, but that isn't our only landmark. There is always something to do. We have the Botanical Gardens, City Island, the choices are endless! Can you believe Edgar Allen Poe lived here?! His cottage is still on Kingsbridge Road. Go out there and enjoy the beautiful weather but do not ever go to the Bronx Zoo on a Wednesday. You'll thank me later.
3. If you see an open fire hydrant, do not panic.
An open fire hydrant means that everybody is outside playing in it. You are at risk of being carried over to it though. It even doubles as a car wash. On extremely hot days, you will be grateful for this.
4. Transportation to the city is NBD.
You can go anywhere you want to in minutes thanks to the subway. All you need is fully loaded metro card, and you're good to go. It will smell a bit funky and may be a bit too crowded, but it is faster than driving and looking for parking.
5. Let's be honest, Pelham Bay is the home of the BBQs.
Can you believe Pelham Bay park is bigger than Central Park? Just minutes away from City Island, everyone goes here to host their summer BBQs. You end up seeing people who you haven't seen in years and even joining their BBQ. You can even bike around the whole park, which is a great workout.
