I originally thought that college was going to be easy. We show up, meet friends, join a few clubs and on occasion, go to class. To say the least, it was not easy, but rather eye-opening. I often found myself creating an image in my mind of what college should be about. With my expectations set too high, here are the top five things I have discovered in my first semester at college.
1. Family
If there is anything that I have learned so far this year, it is that it is okay to get away. Getting away will make you appreciate the good times together and cherish the memories just a little bit more.
2. Friendships
Out with the old and in with the new. Saying goodbye to high school friends was nearly impossible, but college is full of great people. Throwing yourself out there will allow you to meet a variety of people and that is what college is all about, right?
3. Opportunities
In the end, it will be about who you met and the experiences you had. Why not try something that you have been dying to do? Most importantly, try something that you normally would not do. I did just that and learned so much about myself and who I want to be.
4. Time
How in the world did I ever shower and make it to class by 8 a.m. before college? I am lucky now if I brush my hair, let alone shower. College has taught me so much in regards to time management and how to be productive when it comes to being a successful student. In case you haven’t heard, it is okay to watch Netflix and nap in between classes.
5. Never say never.
I told myself that no matter the situation, I was going to experience it to the fullest potential and run at it with my arms wide open. I am looking forward to my second semester with a little background as to how college works, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
Having expectations is good but only to an extent. Being realistic with my goals and how I approached opportunities was by far the key to success during my first semester.
