If you're sick of listening to the same music and want to be ahead of the crowd, try the bands on this list, carefully picked by your friendly neighborhood Spotify-stalker.
1. Frankie Cosmos
This band has a sweet female lead, and enough angst to transport you back to junior year of high school. With an EP and a 10-track album, they're a pretty fresh act. "Frankie Cosmos" stands out with their mid-song tempo changes and quirky lyrics. Summary: she doesn't want to go to the party and her dad is a fireman.
Recommended: O Contest Winner, School
2. Freelance Whales
This band used to play in New York subway stations and gained popularity when one of the bandmates' brother, Darren Criss, stepped on the scene (Darren would promote his brother's band shamelessly and endlessly). They have a folk-electronic feel, so if you like banjos and lyrics you don't understand, "Freelance Whales" is for you.
Recommended: Kilojoules, Ghosting, Starring
3. Big Deal
"Big Deal" got a few people talking in the UK a while back with their album "June Gloom" and really impressed me with a cover of Big Star's "Thirteen" (a song famous for being in the emotional "That 70's Show" series finale). You might recognize a song of theirs from the "Divergent" film. With a true plugged-in sound, "Big Deal" is understated and underrated.
Recommended: In Your Car, 13, Chair
4. Cherry Glazerr
"Cherry Glazerr" stands out with their California vibe and have a bit more of a grunge feel than the rest of the bands on this list. Touring with the surfer-rock-likes of Best Coast and Wavves, this band really held their own with the more popular headliners. They also have a song about a sandwich— now you've got to check them out.
Recommneded: Grilled Cheese, All My Friends
5. Hodera
"Hodera" is the rougher of these recommendations; they are noted for their alternative edge. This band is great for sulking in your bedroom (and your mom will start to ask questions because she thought you got past this phase). The founder of the band puts their sound simply: "sad, college indie-rock with a folk influence."
Recommended: Breathe Easy, Dear Forefathers
