It's 9:33 and you're watching a rerun of whatever "Friends" episode is on when your phone lights up and vibrates.
"I'm picking you up in five. I can't be home anymore. We'll go drive around for a bit." Let's be honest, that text is one of the best texts you could ever receive. Late night drives with one friend, two friends, three friends, however many, are always the perfect time to put on some throwback jams and say whatever it is that's been on your mind lately. Now, I'm speaking from a girl's point of view. Do guy friends even go on these drives? I honestly have no idea and would love to know the answer to that question, so if you can answer it, please get back to me, and you are more than welcome to join me on my next drive. But seriously, speaking for us ladies, these cruises around town under streetlights consist of talking about boys, girls and any drama that comes with either of the two (or both), yelling at the idiots who don't know where they're going while you're on your usual route and old Jonas Brothers and/or "Hannah Montana" rattling the speakers. But of course, these are not the only things that get brought up mid-drive.
1. Boys
We'll start with the obvious conversation right off the bat. Whichever boy you're crushing on at the moment or if you're having boyfriend trouble, or if the trouble is that you don't have a boyfriend or if you've completely sworn off the entire male population (which is usually what ends up happening), it gets talked about first thing. In all honesty (and no offense to the guys reading this, because we know you don't mean it), we usually rant about how dumb you are. But after a good six minute monologue about how much you get on our last nerve, the next seven minutes are spent gushing about how great you are. Trust me, it happens every time. Unless, of course, you've done something really stupid to annoy us, then those numbers fluctuate drastically. But all in all, stupid boy or smart boy, you guys tend to be the ones we talk about as soon as we pull out of the driveway.
2. Girls
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, girls are the next ones to get brought up and any drama or gossip that is attached to your name. And for as petty and stubborn girls can be, there aren't many disagreements or fights that a drive can't solve. Say you're in the middle of a "she said, she said" tiff and your favorite song from "High School Musical 2" comes on shuffle. You're not going to keep sitting there arguing, no! You're going to belt it out along with Troy and Gabriella no matter how much you sound like a dying cat. The the song ends in you both laughing at how badly you sing and some nervous laughter because you think back to your childhood, watching the premiere of the Disney Channel Original Movie and realizing now that you're an adult. Unfortunately, if you're the girl who isn't in the car and you're getting talked about, I'm sorry but it happens to all of us and sometimes a quick rant to a friend about another friend is one of the best ways to step back from the situation and see both sides.
3. School
College (or high school) always gets talked about because let's face it, when we're at home after being away at school for a while, we miss it. We miss our school friends because chances are, they don't live right around the corner from you— and if you get really unlucky, they're spread out all over the country. We miss the routine we were in and we miss our roommates. We miss the parties and getting all dolled up to go out every Friday and Saturday night. And in the car, we let that be known by obsessing over how much we miss our school when we're not there. Unless, of course, you're the total opposite and don't want to go back to school because you don't want to leave your friends at home- I understand that, too, and that doesn't go unspoken. But don't worry, because you'll be driving around at midnight, stopping to get food and rocking out to the "Camp Rock" soundtrack with your best friend again in no time.
4. "Should I cut my hair?"
Ah, the infamous girl question. Your best friend usually knows how to answer this question and with the best judgement. While you're debating on whether to keep it long for the summer or to chop it all off so it's easier to deal with, she's already on Pinterest looking at lengths, styles and colors. This tends to be a relatively short conversation because someone usually ends up making a decision pretty quickly and it's typically made by the person who isn't contemplating getting their hair cut.
5. Future plans
Before getting dropped back off at home after midnight, the last thing discussed is what tomorrow has in store. More often than not, you'll be seeing each other the next day even if it's just the two of you driving around town again. Or maybe you're planning a beach day, or a mall run or dinner plans, anything. Either way, your plans for the next day or hyping up plans that are coming up within the next week gets done before you pull into the driveway. Then you wish one another a good night and throw in, "I'll probably see you tomorrow."
Drive safe!
