As of 2014, the average college debt per borrower in the U.S. has reached $28,950. Unfortunately, public colleges are not getting any cheaper while, despite the fear of debt, the amount of high schoolers aspiring to go to college is growing.
To some, the $28,950 debt does not seem like it is really all that much. Let me put that $28,950 in a few different ways to make it easier to comprehend.
1. Burritos: You can buy 4,257 burritos from Chipotle. That's one burrito a day for almost 12 years. Who would need anything else in life?
2. Burritos (with guac): One burrito, you will be able to buy only one burrito. I'm just kidding, you'll be able to buy 3,271 burritos with guacamole (but seriously, guacamole is way too expensive).
3. Netflix: Ah Netflix, our trusted pal. Thankfully, you'll be able to safely watch Netflix for 301 years without having to worry. That means all of your children's children's children will be able to enjoy Netflix and won't have to change the password so their exes can take part in the Netflix party as well.
4. Wine: For those who have an affinity for boxed wine $28,950 will get you a whopping 1,524 boxes of Franzia wine.
5. Spotify: Who doesn't love being able to stream music anywhere and anytime? With $28,950 you'll be able to rock out for 241 years! Although I'm sure there will be way cooler ways to stream by that time.
No matter how you look at it, the amount of debt that students leave college with is outrageous. We need to continue the conversation to create a plan to make public higher education affordable.
