If you work with children like I do then you’ll understand completely
these five little facts about children and what happens when you work with them. Working with children is the best job
ever (that is if you even like children), but with that said they're the funniest
little human beings with so much energy, and I mean how could you not love them!
Working with children is such a rewarding feeling, you feel like you’re really
making an impact on a child’s life. Just think about all you do as a caregiver
or counselor, we do so much for them and in return they’re putting the biggest
smile on our faces. They also make us better individuals, we can learn so much from them. I hope you can relate
to these facts about children and what it’s like when working with them!
You should always update your phone with today’s pop music:
If you’re someone like me who likes the good old Justin Timberlake or the wonderful Britney Spears you want to play those songs that you grew up on when it comes to freeze dance or a party. Although you know deep down all your kids are going to judge you mad hard if they hear you playing a song like that. Don’t even get me started with playing Indie Rock or Alternative music because then they’ll really think you’re weird. So make sure you have what’s playing on the radio like: “Now watch me whip….. Now watch me nay nay.” I don't understand what's so great about that song, but you kids absolutely love it and always want to "whip" for you. Also don’t forget to make sure you have the appropriate version of a song…
You always want to have hand sanitizer on you:
Kids can sneeze and cough all over you and sometimes you won't even realize it, but hey you still love them! Make sure you’re always applying that hand sanitizer or washing your hands whenever you get the chance. Kids love to hug you and be touchy, but that’s just kids being kids! Although sometimes we don’t know where there little hands have been so watch out!
Keep up with what the kids are watching on TV:
We can all remember the classic Disney Channel with Miley
Cryus (before she went all cray cray on us), Selena Gomez, Raven Symone and
Dylan and Cole Sprous, these people were our heroes and let’s be honest, we
cried when those show ended. Now when I turn on the TV and see what’s playing
on Disney Channel I’m like “What the heck is this? Dog with a blog? Are you
kidding me?” my exact reaction to seeing a name like that for a show. So when you’re
working with children and you tell them about the shows you used to watch they
just coax there heads and say “oh okay…?” Dazed and confused by the fact that
two twin brothers lived in hotel and caused mayhem while their mother was a
singer worker for the hotel, and did I mention they lived in New York City? Wow
I miss the "Suite Life of Zach and Cody" way too much. Just know what the kids
are watching and if you don’t just shake your head and pretend you know what
the heck "Dog with a Blog" is.
NEVER tell them your biggest fear:
Telling a child something like your favorite singer, or your
favorite color, or even your favorite food is one thing, but telling them your
worst fear is the worst decision you can ever make. I know that very well
because when my kids were scared about a thunder storm happening one day at
work I told them “it’s okay to be scared of something, like for me I’m scared
of owls, but it’s okay to have a fear!”. Well to them, my fear was the
best joke of 2013, and I was known as the counselor who thinks owls are scary.
Make sure you keep your fears and secrets like that away from them, you never
know what they’ll do. Maybe one day they’ll come up to you wearing an owl shirt and try
to scare you, or they’ll come up behind you and start hooting in your ear. Kids are ruthless, and to this day they’ll
never let me live that down. Owls are scary and creepy creatures and I’ll never
like them and understand why people think they are cute! THEY ARE NOT CUTE.
Always let them know how special they are to you:
Children are such amazing human beings; they’re always making us laugh, teaching us a new joke, telling us a funny story or making us a drawing that’s so colorful and so bright. Working with children everyday makes you realize how special they really are and how they all have such unique personalities. I know that my children inspire me every day and make me want to be a better person, that’s why we need to remind them of how special and amazing they truly are to us. Never forget to tell a child how awesome that dance move was, or how funny that story was, or how beautiful that piece of art work was. Never forget to remind them why they are special to you.
I love working with children and I hope this article made you remember why you love your own kids or why you love to work with kids. Children are amazing and I want to thank my children for making the patient, warm-hearted person I am today. I want to personally thank my third graders at the YMCA, you guys inspire me every day and you all are awesome!
