We all love to blast the local hip hop radio station in the car with the windows down — spitting out the lyrics to a top 40 rap song and feeling like a boss. We don’t even care that these songs are probably the most offensive thing to happen to women since unequal pay.
Based on their songs, it may seem that these rappers have no respect for women and just treat them like fancy little objects that they can treat however they want. They have their gold chains, their dollar bills and their girl. But maybe we aren’t really looking at the deeper meaning of these heartfelt lyrics. Maybe they are more romantic and caring than we ever thought. Perhaps these songs are a true expression of a rapper’s love for their women. You might even say they're a call to feminism.
1. "Trap Queen" by Fetty Wap
“She’s my trap queen” — How sweet that Fetty treats his girl like a queen. At first listen, it may seem like he is singing about doing drugs and driving fancy cars, but the song is really an ode to his girl and how much fun they have together!
“I just left the mall, I’m getting fly with my baby” — He loves her so much he took her to the mall! Fetty makes it a point to do things he knows his girl will enjoy. The strip club is fun and all, but the mall is where she really wants to be. He probably bought his queen anything she wanted — Lambos and all.
2. “Lollipop” by Lil Wayne
“I make her feel right when it’s wrong” — If Wayne’s girl is ever feeling down, he wants her to know that he will always be there to cheer her up. Her happiness is obviously his main concern. What a caring man.
“When I’m at the bottom, she Hillary Rodham” — He is empowering her! Comparing his girl to a powerful and strong political leader is the highest form of flattery. Wayne doesn’t conform to gender norms and acknowledges that sometimes he can be the inferior one in the relationship, letting his girl take the lead. He’s so progressive.
3. “Candy Shop” by 50 Cent
“I’ll take you to the candy shop” — What a creative date. Skip the usual dinner and a movie, 50 likes to take his girl to fun places like Dylan’s Candy Bar, perhaps, where the two of them can laugh and be young. He really is a kid at heart. Whoever thought this song was about sex clearly wasn’t getting the real message.
“You can have it your way, how do you want it” — He is so selfless. 50 Cent will do whatever his girl wants as long as it makes her happy. She probably gets to pick the restaurant every date night!
4. “Bandz A Make Her Dance” by Juicy J
“She don’t need a loan” — A song about hot chicks dancing in money? I don’t think so. Juicy J acknowledges that his girl has her own steady source of income, and he finds that sexy. A girl making her own money who can pay off all of her bills without a loan is a real turn on for him.
“What’s your real name, not your stripper name?” — Juicy doesn’t care about all the glitz and glam of his girl’s job, he just wants to know the real her. He is interested in her soul, not her pole.
5. “Buy You a Drank” by T-Pain
“You can do it all by yourself” — T-Pain lets his girl be independent. If she wants to get a high-power job or simply go out for a girl’s night alone, T-Pain has no problem with it! He’ll be the Jay-Z to her Beyoncé and show his support.
“Talk to me, I talk back” — He’s a great listener! Communication is necessary in a healthy relationship, and T-Pain totally gets that. He’s fully invested in what his girl has to say, and he’s open to revealing his soul to her.
