There are many misconceptions about country music. One of the worst? The idea that all country music talks about is beer, trucks, and girls. Yeah, a lot of them do. However, there are many songs published that go past the superficial parts of life. Here are five beautiful country songs that will change the way you view life.
5. Rodney Atkins - "Watching You"
In my opinion, it's really difficult to dislike this song. This is a song about a sweet, father-son relationship that tells a story about how easily our actions impact people — especially kids. Although this song is based around a father and son, the message speaks to a universal audience; what we do and say completely affects the people around us and their behaviors, which is why we should always present ourselves in the best light. You never know who looks up to you!
4. Kenny Chesney - "Don't Blink"
I remember being in high school and everyone saying, "Before you'll know it, you'll be in college, living on your own, creating a new life, so make your high school memories count." At the time, I recognized these words — but they never really sunk in until I got to college. All of a sudden, life started moving faster and I now find myself missing the days I could sit down and relax without feeling guilty about it. Kenny Chesney beautifully explains how we need to enjoy and cherish every single moment, because they'll be gone in the blink of an eye.
3. Kristian Bush - "Trailer Hitch"
I've been living in Los Angeles for over a year now, and I've decided that as stereotypical as it sounds, its true; people in Los Angeles love spending money on fancy things and appearance is everything. (Of course, Los Angeles isn't the only place like this). Kristian Bush's song puts life into perspective and dismisses all of these luxury items and lifestyles, saying, "You can't take it with you when you go, never seen a hearse with a trailer hitch." His whole point is that whether you're filthy rich, middle class, or living in poverty, we all end up in the same place in the end so why are we so obsessed with these luxury items, our image, and what people think of us? Does it really matter?
2. Lee Brice - "Love Like Crazy"
I like to think of this song as a life instruction manual. Lee Brice shares a story about a couple that married young with little money, but ended up having a wonderfully successful life together. The whole song is based around the "secret" to this kind of life. What's the secret? According to this song, friendship, truth, working hard, and love. To me, this is amazing. Life seems so simple when it's put this way. I think we try to make life more complicated than it needs to be, but when we have all of those things, what else could we possibly need?
1. Tim McGraw - "Live Like You Were Dying"
I think it's appropriate to finish this list with one of Tim McGraw's most famous songs. Although this is an older song, it will always be relevant. This song reminds us of how easily our life can be taken away and how we should see everyday as a gift, not as a given right. I think about the recent ISIS attacks and mass shootings and how completely devastating it must be to the victim's family and friends; they had no idea their loved ones would wake up that morning for the last time. We must seize the day like it's our last.
