Cabo, California, the Bahamas—all are Spring Break destination goals. The are for the elite, the luckiest of the lucky. For most of us, though, Spring Break means going back home. For those of you who live in the southwestern region of Idaho, being home doesn't have to mean spending the whole week on the couch. Here are five incredible places to go exploring this Spring Break.
1. Bruneau Sand Dunes
Located just south of Mountain Home, Idaho, the Bruneau Sand Dunes State Park looks like it contains any other Idaho mountain range... except each of the towering hills are made entirely of sand. The Bruneau Sand Dunes are home to North America's tallest single-structured sand dune, which stands at 470 feet tall! The dunes are fun and easy to hike up and explore. Be sure to check out the telescope in the observatory when night falls for some breathtaking stargazing.
2. Table Rock
Table Rock is a staple hike for anyone living in the Boise area. Nestled in the Rocky Mountain foothills, Table Rock sits above the Old Idaho State Penitentiary (which is well worth checking out as well). The hike to the 3,629-foot summit has multiple trails and access points. At the very top of the mountain stands a 60-foot cross that is illuminated at night. In addition to the immaculate view of the entire Treasure Valley, don't forget to explore the backside of the rock for the beautiful graffiti caves.
3. Shoshone Falls
Though it is called the "Niagra of the West," the Shoshone Falls are actually 212 feet high, which is 45 feet higher than the Niagra Falls! You can find the falls northeast of Twin Falls, Idaho. One of the most monumental occurrences at the falls took place in 1974 when Evel Knievel attempted to jump the falls (he failed and almost drowned). These waterfalls span about 1,000 feet across!
4. Freak Alley
Were you really a teen in southwestern Idaho if you didn't visit Freak Alley at least once? What started as a painting of a door has turned into an entire alley full of some of the most beautiful street art you will find in Idaho. Every few years artists come and repaint and add on to the murals.
5. Jump Creek
Getting to Jump Creek involves a short 1/2 mile hike but the 60-foot waterfall is more than worth it. The trail is perfect for picnicking and taking breathtaking photos along the way. Once you reach the end of your hike you can jump into the water at the base of the waterfall! Some of the surrounding cliffs reach up to 600 feet, which makes for the perfect swimming hole right in the backyard of Marsing, Idaho.
