First off, the Bible is packed with all sorts of primitive things. Once you take a close look at it, it's pretty obvious that it has little relevance to modern morality. These are by no means the most brutal passages in the Bible, but simply the ones that showed me how awful of a text it really is.
All of these quotes are taken from the New International Version of the Bible, yet they are all in basically every version of the Bible with slightly different wording.
1).Deuteronomy 22:28-29
"28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives."
In my opinion, this passage not only says that raping little girls is acceptable, but that the girl may be sold into a lifetime of sex slavery. A shekel of silver is somewhere between 7 and 17 grams (the amount has changed throughout history) so for this calculation we'll go with the high estimate in order to give the Bible the benefit of the doubt. 50 Shekels times 17 grams apiece is 850 grams of silver, which is 30.3 ounces of silver. At current market price for silver, that's about $476 US dollars worth of silver. ($196 if you have 7 gram shekels.) If you raped my daughter I certainly would not be willing to sell her to you for a couple hundred dollars.
2). Exodus 21:20-21
20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property."
Not only does this passage justify slavery, but I believe that it also says it is okay to beat your slaves. As long as you don't kill them, beat away.
3). Ephesians 6:5
5 "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ."
Once more, slavery is totally cool according to the Bible. Slavery is definitely not very cool. This is something I do not agree with.
4). Deuteronomy 17:12
12 "Anyone who shows contempt for the judge or for the priest who stands ministering there to the Lord your God is to be put to death. You must purge the evil from Israel."
Christians often criticize Islam for jihad, and claim it says people of all other faiths must die in the Quran. Well, the Bible has the same rule. Killing people for having different beliefs than you is rude, especially when we could expand our views and beliefs with fair philosophical debate. But then again, massacring your ideological opposition is a good way to win an argument. If you look at history, that's basically how Christians have dealt with other faiths and ideas that opposed their dogma, from killing indigenous shamans to burning scientists.
5).Numbers 31:17-18
"17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man."
These are orders from Moses telling his men to keep all of the virgin girls for themselves. As we noted earlier, I believe the Bible does permit owning sex slaves. Also, they had just murdered all of their fathers, so it looks like Moses and his army aren't even going to have to pay for these sex slaves. God sure does know how to reward his soldiers for slaughtering people he doesn't like.
Luckily, If I had to guess, I'd say a lot of Christians who reference the Bible have probably not analyzed it like I did above, nor do they believe anything in it anymore. Sadly, the same cannot be said in places like Ethiopia. And even though these horrific verses were written a long time ago, in my opinion, any cult that has such rules in their handbook is not a cult I would consider even somewhat morally sound.
The Bible has been rewritten and edited dozens of times. It seems like one might want to bail on some of these rules, yet the church decided that they should keep it for whatever reason.
If you agree with me, you will agree that Christianity has figured out how to sell people their own spirituality whilst the greedy elites of the church used the power given to them by their followers to conquer the world and force their ideas upon almost every part of the globe. I think that Christianity has had a key role in exterminating indigenous cultures since its founding, and it isn't looking like it's about to stop. Christians have been on the front lines of opposing every social justice movement to ever exist, from the civil rights movement back in the 50's and 60's to the ongoing fight for gay rights that still exists today.
