I believe I should begin by saying that I'm a little biased. Women are pretty great - and we tend to get s*** done!
In honor of the last week of Women's History Month (honestly, I think that this month was created out of pity, but that is another story), here are 5 total badass women that history overlooked.
1. Margaret Sanger
This total badass was a Founding Mother (or not...) of Planned Parenthood in 1916, when she was arrested while opening America's first birth control clinic at a time when contraception was illegal. She got the idea when she was working as a nurse and saw women dying from abortions (which were very illegal at the time). She continued fighting for reproductive and women's health rights for the rest of her life.
2. Hedy Lamarr
Lamarr was a huge influencer during World War II and played a very important role in helping the allies won. The actress, although known for her looks until 2012, turned out to be the inventor of WiFi. Yes, that's right. Her idea was a frequency telecommunication system that couldn't be interrupted by the German U-Boats. "Frequency-hopping" is what she called it. Today, this "frequency hopping" is used by wireless phones, GPS, and even the military uses it. Total badass.
3. The Mirabel Sisters
I'm giving you three for the price of one. The Mirabel sisters were ALL badasses. Maria Teresa, Patria, and Minerva all spoke out and publicly opposed the dictatorship regime of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican. They became feminist icons of the 1950s, and they couldn't be stopped. This was, until the government assassinated all of them, by clubbing them to death. This was how the Trujillo rule ended - people were not happy with him and got even.
4. Ida B. Wells-Barnett
Ida was a woman of many trades. She was a journalist first and foremost, and was an activist. She was anti-lynching, and when three of her friends were lynched, she was NOT happy. She investigated in her OWN newspaper... and then her newspaper offices were destroyed. Funny how that works out, right? She moved to Chicago then, and marched for universal suffrage in 1913.
She stopped the segregation of schools in Chicago, and was a co-founder of the NAACP. She was a total human rights activist.
5. Nancy Wake
NANCY WAKE WAS A BADASS. I would have been her best friend, had we lived in the same time period. A spy for the British Special Operations in World War II, she was also the most decorated servicewoman and the Gestapo's most-wanted. She earned the nickname "The White Mouse" since she always seemed to avoid capture. Fearless Nancy Wake, a saboteur, also led an army of 7,000 Maquis troops in guerrilla warfare against the Nazis.
Total badass.
