Affordable adventures are the key to making unforgettable memories throughout high school. However, most of the time we struggle to come up with things to do and end up wasting the entire day away. Instead of struggling to brainstorm ideas, you can use this list to plan your next great adventure.
1. Georgia Nuclear Aircraft Laboratory
Yes, that’s right. We have an abandoned nuclear factory right here in Georgia. Located in the sprawling Dawson Forest, this 1950’s testing center was a joint project between the Air Force and Lockheed Martin, its function to test nuclear-powered aircraft designs. The facility was closed down in 1971 but the foundation can still be found, intertwined with the branches of the forest. Some parts have been fenced off, but it's still possible for explorers to discover parts of the complex. Despite its constant contact with nuclear material, there is little to no radiation detected in the forest, making it a top contender for an awaiting adventure.
2. Arabia Mountain
This little-known gem is located southeast of Atlanta, off of I-20. Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, this mountain is like a smaller Stone Mountain, but with even better views. The sunset sights are some of the best you can get while staying near metro Atlanta, and on top of that, it is free to park and only 30 minutes away from Johns Creek.3. Sweetwater Creek
Sweetwater Creek State Park is located just outside Atlanta, along the banks of the Sweetwater Creek. It has over nine miles of rustic trails filled with lush foliage. One of the best aspects of this park is the ruins of the New Manchester Mill, located two miles off the Sweetwater Red Trail. It allows for some great spots for photos, and obstacles to climb on and explore. Biggest perk? On a clear day, you can get some of the best views of the Atlanta skyline.
4. Downtown Duluth
Downtown Duluth is about 15 minutes away from Johns Creek High School and offers a very fun weekend night. They have many small restaurants, a large field, a fountain and an amphitheater which usually features locals bands. I highly recommend The Chocolaterie; it has some of the best ice cream at very reasonable rates!
5. Haunted Pillar
It’s an old pillar. You touch it. You die. What more adventure do you need?
Now you have some options to go on some amazing excursions! Remember to make the most of high school while you can; you're only young now.
