5 Abilene Urban Legends to Get You in the Mood for Halloween

Abilene, Texas is undoubtedly old. And with that old age comes old secrets and old legends. Here a few legends and hauntings I grew up hearing... and experiencing...

1. Ft. Phantom Hill and Lake

Perhaps one of the most documented haunted places in Abilene, Fort Phantom Hill has proven to be a great destination for spooky sightings. Located on FM 600, this fort has been featured on Ghost Hunters, and TV's Unsolved Mysteries. Many studies and investigations have occurred over the years, documenting native american apparitions, footsteps, and photographed orbs.

Fort Phantom Lake, on the other hand, has a story that is constantly changing. Some say the spirit that haunts the lake is of a woman who was murdered by her war-veteran of a lover suffering from PTSD and dumped in the lake, while others believe that she is a grief-stricken widow of an officer who drowned herself. Stories aside, many report having their lights, radio, and phones messed with after flashing their lights three times while going over the bridge.

2. The Grace Museum

Originally built as a hotel in 1909, The Grace Museum is said to be one of the most haunted buildings in downtown Abilene. Many people claim to hear footsteps on the top floors, see doorknobs turning on their own, and talking on the otherside of doors late at night. Music and dancing is often heard after hours in the ballroom downstairs where the old residents of the Grace Hotel are believed to be partying the night away.

3. Paramount Theatre

The Paramount Theatre built in 1930, also located downtown, is believed to be haunted by a woman in white. Workers have reported seeing a woman in the balcony or on the staircase in the lobby dressed in all white. Others have photographed pictures with orbs, as seen below.

4. Anson Lights

Located right outside of Abilene, The Anson Lights, could be considered the second most documented Abilene Legend. With several videos on the internet, anyone could see this strange occurrence. Many can see a small light off in the distance appear and move in strange motions and sometimes separate into two separate orbs. Locals claim it is the flickering light of a concerned mother's lantern looking for her two boys lost in a snowstorm, doomed to never find them.

Here is a video of this phenomenon:

5. Whitten Inn

No one really knows when strange things began to happen at this local hotel, but recently they have become more apparent. Several investigations have taken place where people have reported bathroom lights turning on and off on their own, objects reappearing under the bed, and strange early morning smells. Others see shadow-men walking in and out of their room as well as seeing a red-bearded man walking down the hallways late at night. One investigator claims to have gotten these shadow-men on camera. Long story short, Abilene is haunted. The important question is if you believe it. So this Halloween be careful, because footsteps you hear behind you might be a ghost...

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
