As the end of summer approaches, we scramble to make every moment linger. Ages of binge-watching Netflix or collecting hours at a summer job have drained the warm days of their existence. But before the clamber to find that one binder for Physics begins, here are a few suggestions for how to finish the hot season with a bang -- rather than a misfire.
1. Visit a fair
Where I live, most fairs happen in the deep recesses of the month of August. From dare-devilish rides to fried everything, fairs have a niche for nearly every personae.
2. Go to a farmer's market
3. Watch a local play
Support local actors. They've spent their entire summer preparing this performance.
4. Visit a zoo
5. Ride the coasters at an amusement park
According to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, 400 amusement parks exist in the United States alone.
6. Muse at the items in an antique's store
7. Take a hike
8. Visit an art museum
9. Paint mugs
10. Splurge at a thrift shop
11. Check out the events at your local library
12. Visit a yard/garage sale
13. DIY glow-in-the-dark bowling
Materials needed: plastic water bottles, glow sticks, glow in the dark ball.
14. Finger paint
15. Have a picnic with your best friend
16. Watch a documentary
17. Tie dye a bag
Or really anything for that matter . . .
18. Make chalk creations on the sidewalk
19. Have a photo shoot adventure based on a theme
20. Dress up in something fancy and go somewhere mundane
My best friend and I visited downtown in fairy outfits.
21. Try recipes from all those food videos people keep posting
22. Go on a long bike trip
23. Care for a small plant
24. Test your vocal chords in karaoke
25. Laser tag
26. Visit a park
27. What would a summer be without a fire and s'mores?
28. Film a music video
29. Make a time capsule
30. Pail pong
How to play: Place a bucket anywhere in a room (if you can dangle it from something, it creates trickier shots). Hit a bouncy ball against any surface to try to land the ball inside the bucket. Count how many times it takes before you can land the ball inside the bucket. If you sink a shot without the ball hitting another surface first, you have to add ten points to your score. Whoever has the lowest score at the end of the game wins.
31. Make homemade jam
32. Cosplay
33. Host a water balloon fight
34. Make the ultimate pillow and blanket fort
35. Have a family board game tournament night
Or, if your family enjoys video games, that works just as well. My family takes Mario Kart very seriously.
36. Make tie blankets
37. Complete a puzzle
38. Melted crayon art
Materials needed: some sort of canvas, crayons, glue (to secure crayons to canvas), hair dryer (or some other heat source)
39. Visit a nursing home
Often, my youth group would host a game night at the nursing home. We learned so much from the residents and lost several rounds of boggle. Legacy Project gives several helpful pieces of advice for planning a visit to an assisted living facility.
40. Teach yourself how to juggle
If you already know, add one more item to the mix. For example: if you can juggle four tennis balls, incorporate a fifth.
41. Fold a piece of paper into an origami creation
42. Write a poem
43. Host a movie marathon
44. Start a blog
Or better yet . . . write for Odyssey!
