4 Things Millennials Should Know About Buying Their First House

Although putting yourself in a position to buy your first home requires a lot of hard work, the rewards you reap as a result of this hard work are more than worth the effort involved. Before you start down the road to owning a home, though, there are some important things you need to know to ensure that you don't run across any nasty surprises. As a Millennial, specifically, there are a few insights that will help you get a great deal and ensure that your home buying process is a pleasant one.

There Are Multiple Loan Programs Available

Before you buy your first home, it's important to research your mortgage options to ensure you get the best deal. That's because there are multiple loan programs available, especially if you are a first-time home buyer. In many cases, these loan programs offer you the chance to get in a home with less than the traditional 20% down payment, which can be a great option if you need to get into a home quickly.

A Real Estate Agent Is Your Best Friend

Even though buying a home is generally more simple than selling a home, it's still important to utilize a real estate agent to help you with the buying process. An agent gives you access to multiple real estate services that can help you save money and protect your legal rights as a buyer. Plus, establishing a relationship with an agent now will give you someone to turn to if you want to sell your home a few years down the road.

It's Not Like the Home Shows

For many Millennials, their idea of buying a home has been shaped by the countless home-buying shows that have been so popular over the last couple of decades. However, in general, buying a home is nothing like these shows. In most cases, the process is more complicated and time-consuming than a 30-minute show makes it appear. Plus, you will rarely only be looking at two or three options to make your final decision, instead considering dozens of properties in your desired area.

Don't Expect Your Dream Home

Although any home can provide a good deal of stability, you shouldn't expect to end up in your dream home for your very first purchase. If you're looking to your parents' home as an example of what you should be able to afford, remember that they have been saving and working hard for decades to end up with the home they currently have. The good news, though, is that getting into a home now will help you build equity so that you can afford a nicer home in the future.

It's Worth It

Although the home buying process can be stressful and may not match your expectations, it is worth all the craziness and time. After all, buying a home represents a major milestone that represents your responsibility and maturity. Therefore, when you've signed the last paper to get into your new home, it's a great idea to celebrate this achievement.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
