A genre that I feel doesn't really get enough recognition is the singer / songwriter genre, but there are some artists in particular that really should be bigger names than they are! Singer / Songwriter is a great genre for coffeehouse type occasions, winding down, or starting the morning with a softer wake up call. Here are some artists and songs in the genre that I really adore.
Sarah Jaffe is a singer wongwriter from Texas and she's definitely my favorite in the genre. Her voice sounds intense and soft at the same time, I'm not sure how she does it. She sings in a way that always either shuts me up or gets me to sing along, and I love how magnetic her lyrics can be. My favorite song of hers is Adeline, it's the song I listen to when I'm not feeling well or I need to calm down.
Laura Marling is a singer songwriter from England who sings like she's there to teach you something about yourself, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't get me every time. My favorite song by her is To Be A Woman. Her voice is soft, but the message is hard and clear.
Lotte Kestner is another one of my all time favorites in the genre. Her songs have a raw finish that captures her essence like a butterfly in a net and I love it. There's not much extra done to her songs, but they all sound unique and her voice is mesmerizing none the less. I especially love her guitar, it sounds different to me for some reason, maybe because she usually picks the melodies versus strumming.
Benjamin Francis Leftwich is a singer wongwriter from England, and two of his songs are two of my all time favorite songs, Atlas Hands and Snowship. Leftwich became popular in 2011 with his first album reaching #35 in the UK Charts. His most recent album was actually released only a few months ago, and it's as brilliant as I thought it would be.
If you were to make a Pandora playlist of any of these four, you definitely wouldn't be let down, especially if you like quieter music or you just want to try something new. These artists are super hard workers, they're brilliant, and they really mean a lot to me. Give them a go!
