4 Little Reminders for Incoming Freshmen

As my very first college semester has come to a close, I feel sort of obligated to say something in regards to how much college has sculpted me over these past few months. There is so much more to “the college experience” than a sea of papers and the misery of finals.

I feel the need to document this not only to keep a reminder of how much I’ve grown, but to reach out to those who might be debating whether going to college is the answer for them.

Don’t get me wrong, there have been plenty of times when this place urges me to run, screaming into the void, but the bright spots of my time spent here have been so warm. They outshine the bad by far.

So, here goes nothing:

1.) This is not a misconception – on an array of levels, college is so much better than high school. Gone are the cliques, the “busy work” during classes, and the constant sense of feeling like you’re under a microscope. There is nothing but wiggle room – both socially and academically – for you to come into your own, and it’s always ready to be utilized.

2.) You are going to meet the most incredible people on the face of the earth. Seriously. You thought you had great friends in high school. You will hold your good high school friends dear and strive to stay in touch, but the new environment you’re thrown into brings new friendships. And they are great. Love them. Embrace them. You need each other more than you’ll ever understand.

3.) As many positive people flow into your life, unfortunately, negative ones may pass by, too. Please remember this: not everyone will have the same compassion as you do. You may put forth kindness, and without any rhyme or reason, others may not accept it. They may give you the exact opposite in return. Some days, you may feel mistreated or unwanted, and you’ll be tempted to fall into a slump. Busy yourself. Find an outlet (I’d recommend finding something fun to do on campus that day) and shake it off. Find your best friend and hug them. Keep in good spirits. Someone’s negativity should never steal your sunshine. You will persevere.

4.) Last, but not least, in all circumstances, please be yourself. At college, there will always be someone in search of someone as wonderful as you.

To my high school senior friends, I hope this helps you take confident steps onto your campuses come fall. To my fellow college students who may have stumbled upon this, I hope these wonderful discoveries hold as little reminders to keep on keeping on when the going gets tough. Be well, all!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
