4 Reasons Dorming In The City Is A Good Idea

It's not nearly as simple to study on the commute as some commuters suggest.

It was only my second semester at Hunter College when I was introduced to the idea of dorming at Brookdale Campus. Though Hunter College is a commuter school and I can easily get to and from school each day by train, express bus, or ferry, it takes up to about four hours of each school day. Immersing yourself into multiple science classes a semester is hard enough without the commute, and let me tell you, it's not nearly as simple to study on the commute as commuters say.

1. Time Management

Time management is a learned skill. Creating a schedule is simple, but following that schedule is not nearly as trivial. While it is extremely difficult to manage your time when there is no sense of constancy in commuting, dorming allows for a broader picture.

2. Silence

My favorite part of dorming is the ability to choose when I could be alone. I can go into my room for one hour and sleep on a mattress topper that I question to this day for being so comfortable, or I can go across the hall and bother one of my many close friends that have the same option.

3. Study Groups

While everyone has their own methods of studying, I work best in a typical study group environment. My friends and I scavenge the building for new study places we could make our own, new white boards to fill with our knowledge. We engage with one another for companionship and for a better understanding of the topic. It's not as stressful when we're stressing together.

4. City Life

Dorming in the city, while in many ways is not nearly as luxurious as the dorms of other campuses, can't be beat in terms of location. The city is our campus. We are free to roam the beautiful streets that many travel so far to visit. We can be tourists in our city.

Dorming in the city is the best of both worlds. It allows you the independence you seem to lose sight of during break, and also gives you the proximity to home which allows you to return whenever you're feeling home sick, or just need to be taken care of. It allows for creating your own time and for spending time with those around you. Being able to get to school from home each day, though possible, isn't necessarily easy. Dorming may be that outlet you've been searching for.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
