As family weekend is quickly approaching, there are a few steps that each student should follow in order to ensure that their family has the most amazing time, and they are reminded why they sent you to school there in the first place. Remember to remain calm, this only occurs once during the school year.
Step 1: Clean, clean, clean.
Start with the trash that hasn't been taken out since your parents were here for move-in. Do your laundry so that your parents don't think you wear the same clothes every day, even if you do. Do the dishes, or don't, so that they know that you at least attempt to make food. As long as you clean the basics like your bedroom and bathroom, they should be happy, right? Maybe plug in some air fresheners.
Step 2: Prepare your body for endless amounts of food.
Everyone knows that when your parents come, it means one thing: free food and an excuse to eat everything under the sun. Take them somewhere nice to eat, where you can order something you haven't eaten in months and they can make great dinner conversation about classes, grades, and the same pep talk you got when you were leaving for school. Remember, leftovers are just as good as the first time you ate the meal. Hopefully, they will last you the rest of the week.
Step 3: Clear out your freezer and refrigerator.
Throw out any moldy food that you bought two months ago when your parents moved you in and you forgot about. You know you will be hitting up the grocery store when they come, so make sure you have room for all of the frozen foods and fresh veggies that your mom insists that you buy. Maybe if you're lucky, your parents will even bring you some homemade meals that you just have to throw in the microwave.
Step 4: Have an idea of what you want to do, and have fun doing it.
Make reservations because you know everyone else will go to that one restaurant you wanted to take your family to. Especially if you have younger siblings visiting, you want to show them a good time. Plan on maybe giving them a tour or taking a stroll through campus. It might be surprising, but they might want to see where you have class or where you eat lunch.
Enjoy the weekend and remember you are the reason they came all the way here. Let your dad reminisce on his old college days and let your mom take control organizing everything you own. Even if they still manage to embarrass you, embrace every second of it.
