5 Things I Learned When I Married The Geek

And I thought I was geeky before...

My husband and I have been together for a little over a year now. Like in any marriage, there have been amazing times and there have been not so amazing times, but we power through it and keep each other laughing. Before I left West Virginia and came to college, I thought I was the biggest geek I could have been. I could binge watch three to six episodes a night, I read an average of two books a week, and I could kick some serious butt in "Mortal Kombat." I didn't know there was a whole other side of the geek spectrum and that I would soon be introduced to it and learn more about it than anyone ever thought possible. These are only a few of the things that I learned in my year with him, I can't imagine what the future will hold for us.

1. Video Games

MMO's, RPG's, FPS's, and all the other letters of the alphabet. You name it, I've learned about it. I've heard all the specs on every different gaming console and platform and the best PC gaming gear. I've learned about all the conventions and websites where you can buy games, DLC's, and demo's. We've even planned some trips to these conventions once we graduate. Growing up with brothers, I thought I knew all there was to gaming. I was wrong.

2. Anime

Japanese cartoons that I probably spend way too much time watching, but I can't help it. You might be familiar with the more popular shows like "Naruto," "Bleach," or "Pokemon." They're not just for kids though, with so many different categories, there is literally something for everybody. Maybe it's because the animation is so cute, maybe it's the stories that suck you in, or maybe it's the great character development. No matter what it is, I can binge watch an entire season in a day.

3. Card Games

There have been many spring and summer days passed playing "Cards Against Humanity" or "Timeline" with friends or by ourselves. Now, this might actually seem pretty normal, plenty of people go out and play card games on a Friday night. The nerdiness comes in when he starts talking about "Magic The Gathering" or "Yu-Gi-Oh!" I've sat through one or two of his games and gotten lost in all the various dice rolls, card flipping, and shuffling. Card games, they're not just for kids anymore.

4. Science

It's the classic love story, a nerdy biology major and a bibliophile history major, right? Err, not so much. In high school I received top marks in anatomy and physiology, physics, and earth science. Knowing this you would think he wouldn't have a lot to talk about that I wouldn't already know. You would be wrong. Dinner talk is about labs, he kindly and patiently explains everything he learned that day or will be going over. Unfortunately for me, this can include anything from infectious diseases and parasites to chemical reactions and scientific practices. Not that I mind too much, I love watching him do what he loves and learning from him.

5. Fashion

Being just a jeans and t-shirt gal myself, I've never had much reason to care about any kind of fashion. My husband is a patterns kind of person and before meeting me, saw no problem with wearing a plaid shirt and a pair of plaid shorts. Helping him pick out outfits has not been easy, but we've managed. I still have to give him advise every now and then...or everyday.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
