Going to college is a huge and exciting step. You're learning to become a fully-functioning member of society, and learn how to live on your own for the first time. Sure it seems exciting and glamorous at first, but after a few weeks, you start to miss certain aspects of home that are not available at college. Here are some things that happen at college that will make you want to go back home.

1. The showers

College showers are incredibly small, and anything but luxurious. There is absolutely no room to shave your legs and the walls are always filled with other people's hair. You also have to wear shower shoes all the time because of all the gross things living on the floor of the shower and the threat of getting athlete's foot. Plus the water most likely contains chlorine, making your hair start to feel gross even after just a few hours. They'll really make you miss the large showers of home and actually having to shower barefoot.

2. The food

On your tour, the guide will show you all of the amazing places that you are able to eat on campus. But once you actually go here and experience the food every single day for months, it's not all that glamorous. At home, eating fast food-style food seemed like a treat, but in college, it is so easy to get tired of. You start missing your mom's home cooking, and real dessert, and even ice for your water. Fast food is fun for awhile, but eventually it gets old.

3. The beds

Beds in college are twins beds, which are way smaller than they look. It's also kind of gross to think of how many people have slept on that mattress before you. I have a queen sized bed at home, so sleeping on a twin took some getting used to. Plus the bed was lofted, so my biggest fear coming in to college was falling off of my bed.

4. Quality time

Yes you meet your best friends and bridesmaids in college that you hang out with literally 24/7, but some times you just need your mom. You need to lie on the couch in the living room and binge watch your favorite tv show, or watch whatever sports game is on tv with your dad, or bake with your grandma, or even fight with your little brother. Little things like that are what you didn't realize that you would miss until you didn't have them anymore. So don't take them for granted while you are still living at home.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
