As a society full of people who live in a world so focused on pop culture, we all have to constantly differentiate between the parts of us that are genuine versus the parts that are false. Being a celebrity can't be as easy as it looks. I think that an element of being famous has to be what you do and don't do for other people. It's how much control you have over yourself versus how much of you your fans have made. However, there are a few people on that side of the tracks (granted, some more famous than others) who I can just tell are genuinely enjoying what they do, because they're "doing them" first and foremost. Here are some of my favorite breaths of fresh air in entertainment at the moment.
Tess Holliday
As the world's first size 22 supermodel, Tess Holliday's success speaks to people (not just women) of all sizes and backgrounds. Her attitude toward the adversity she has faced and continues to face in some respects is accepting and real, and I find that inspiring. She is someone who knows who she is and enjoys what she does, and who knows that she will shine in spite of who or what may try to prevent her from doing so.
Big Freedia
A New Orleans household name, Big Freedia holds true to her self-proclaimed label of "queen diva". She is a staple in bounce music and dance, an author and television star, one of Beyonce's good friends, and an entity of untouchable sass. If you ever have the chance to see her perform live, please do so. It is not to be missed.
Baddie Winkle
Baddie Winkle is far cooler in her senior years than feel like I am at quarter life. She's a southern great-grandma, and she has become a social media fashion and party icon of sorts. She is the definition of "no fear", and she makes us a little less afraid of getting old in hopes that we, too, could turn out like her.
Eric Montel
Eric Montel has come into the spotlight within the past week. He's a professional merman who loves his life.
