Singleness is not always a fun concept. Some girls enjoy being alone after a long relationship, but most of us don't want to be single. The problem with that? We tend to see singleness as an ignored prayer, a disappointment, and sometimes a negative reflection of ourselves. While we do get impatient, this season of our lives is not a time for anger or anticipation, but a time for preparation and seeking His kingdom.
If you ever find yourself in the common mindset of impatience, here are some Bible verses to remind you what Jesus wants us to focus on during this time in our lives.
1 Corinthians 7: 32-35
"I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord."
When you are single, you have the privilege to pursue only Jesus. God encourages us to be in a relationship with him before anyone else, and being single is a season of preparation. Use this time to remind yourself how you can please Jesus, not someone else.
Mark 12:25
"For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven."
So if God is our husband, and we can't keep our earthly husband forever, what's the point? Yes, we will not be married in heaven. We will not have our husbands forever. But we will have God forever. This is one of the most important verses I have ever read. Every time I ask God for a man, a material object, anything of this earth, His voice comes into my head. He asks, "Emily, if I gave you nothing you ask for, will you still praise my name?"
We do not get men forever, but we do get God forever. If I was never given a husband, will I still praise His name? Yes. We have to be content in His will.
Matthew 6:33
"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
We need to remember that seeking God is our number one priority, a boyfriend or husband will be added to your life once you are pursuing His kingdom. Keep living out His will each day, and blessings will come. Think back to your last relationship. Did you stop beginning your day in prayer to reply to his good morning text? Did you decide not to go to a Sunday service to do homework together? These small, seemingly harmless decisions represent compromises for seeking His kingdom first.
Take this season to establish a routine with Jesus. Make Him your non-negotiable.
Isaiah 43:4
"Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life."
God will never keep his gifts from you. He will never hold something back that you were meant to have.
Let me say that again: He will never keep his gifts from you.
God has a perfect person for you, but have you ever stopped to think, am I the perfect person for someone else? Do I see myself as precious, honored, and loved by God or by a man? We need to give our lives and our worth to Jesus before anyone on earth.
