With each passing day, the bright and progressive minds of this generation seem to pump out breakthrough after breakthrough in the ever-expanding realms of science and technology. Inventions and discoveries that would be considered miraculous by the standards of humans of a hundred years ago, if not less, come out so frequently that it takes a special quality for them to rise to the top of our radar as a web-surfing society that is flooded with an ocean of content from moment we hit 'log in.' It seems like the next big thing to grab hold of our fleeting attention spans may just be here – in the form of 360° video.
Now, the concept of 360° video itself isn't entirely that revolutionary. People have been tinkering around with it for the last couple years, but it seems that 2016 is poised to be the year that it really begins to take off on a grand scale. If you’ve never seen one of these videos, just pull up your Facebook and get your scroll on for a bit, it shouldn’t be too long before you stumble across one. Virtual reality has been touted as the next big thing in the entertainment industry for a good while now, and there are plenty of people out there doing awesome things with various VR technologies, but the turning point happens once you manage to get into peoples’ homes. Now you can even have a bit of semi-virtual reality experience with you in your pocket. Your phone can be the portal that takes you through the barrel of a wave, or front row at your favorite artist’s show, inside the ring of a boxing match, or in the cockpit of a jet plane; the possibilities have no end in sight.
Youtube and Facebook have been some of the biggest proponents for the 360° video movement. You read it here, people of the internet; you’re going to start seeing these videos everywhere, and you’re going to immerse yo’self like you’ve never immersed yo’self before. We may not have flying cars zooming through the air above us just yet, but the future is still shaping up to be pretty sweet.
