After a refreshing month-long break, many have trouble getting back in the swing of things at the beginning of spring semester. It's nearly culture shock. After weeks of being carefree and slightly annoyed by our parents' need for control, we are back to being almost-adults and preparing for another semester of college.
Here are 3 stages of thought we all have during the first week back in class.
1. "I'm so glad to be my own boss again."
We love our parents! Without them we would not have grown into the wonderful almost-adults we are today. After the mental exhaustion and stress of finals, returning home to the comfort of your roots is so relaxing...for a week. After the laundry is done and you tell your loved ones all about the previous semester, you realize nothing is more annoying than mom's 9 p.m. curfew and dad's interrogation before leaving. Even though they have your best interests in mind, it's nice to return to campus and all the freedom that comes with college.
With great freedom comes great responsibility....
2. "I have no idea what the f*ck I'm doing."
Suddenly our parents are no longer around to guide us again. Syllabus week comes with the most free time we have all semester, in addition to stress when we see all that we are supposed to accomplish in 16 weeks. We nearly forget how to survive, ignoring laundry and meal times as we adjust back to life on campus. We question everything from where a classroom is located to how often we need to wash our hair.
3. "I can do this."
Once you find yourself amongst friends, the week gets easier. Creating a schedule that works for you is no easy task, but learning how to balance your health, social life and academic career comes with a sense of excitement.
