We live in a world where we are entirely consumed by our devices. Whether we're tweeting, checking Instagram, or binge-watching Netflix, the time we spend on our phones or laptops is time we spend away from others, and time we typically waste.
You've heard it all before: carpe diem; live life to the fullest; explore; adventure awaits. Or, let's be real -- you probably just read those sayings while scrolling through your Tumblr or Insta-feed. Maybe you even reposted them to add a little zest to your page.
What if we actually tucked our phones away and went on a real adventure? What if, when we are out and about with our families and friends, we shut our devices off and created real “stories” instead of obsessing over everyone else's on Snapchat?
Face it. Our generation is fighting a serious addiction. We seek validation through our media. This problem poses a challenge to us and has even been accused of causing depression and creating social anxiety. But there's good news: there are quick and easy ways to help us put our phones down and truly start living.
1. Power off.
Yeah, it's that simple. If you're feeling overwhelmed, just say no and turn it off. Do not allow your media to control you. It's okay to disconnect for a few hours, especially when surrounded by others. In fact, it's healthy.
2. Switch it up.
If you're a social media addict, and often find yourself mindlessly scrolling, try moving the apps around on your phone. That way, the next time your thumb moves towards it, you will open a different app and be reminded that maybe whatever you were going to view isn't really necessary at the moment. Switching up the location of your apps is a sure way to help you disconnect.
3. Go cold turkey.
While this method is definitely the most difficult and the most extreme, it can be very effective. Simply deleting the apps from your phone can help you realize how addicted you are, and therefore help you solve the problem. If this sounds too hard, try deleting a new app each day for a week and see how far you can get. If you're not successful, don't sweat it! Effort is key and every little bit helps.
So, millennials, it’s up to us. We can break our addictions and open up the doors to live happier and healthier lives. We can place more value on the time we spend with others. Keep in mind, we can still have our media without allowing it to consume us. It's all about how we use it! Hopefully, these tips will help you on your way to disconnect from your devices, and connect with those around you!
