Everyone has been told, at some point in their life, that they deserve better. Yet so many of us sit there and dwell on the fact that we think it does not get better. We find ourselves entangled in the people we've had by our sides for years; so entangled that we seem to miss how far these people are holding back. It might be time to put some distance between yourself and another person if:
1. They never want to do anything with anyone else.
Being so confined to your friend just to allow them to be "comfortable" can really be setting you back. What if you had gone to that party Friday night? What if you had invited your other friend along to the beach and all three of you had had an amazing time? You won't know until you branch out and away.
2. All they want to do is party.
Partying is a part of the "normal" lifestyle experienced by many college students, but when is too much really too much? If you constantly find yourself holding your friend's hair in the bathroom or searching desperately for their keys on the sticky spilled-drink covered floor, it's time to call it quits. Everyone has their mishaps, but if this person is constantly overdoing it and encouraging you to as well, you're being held back. That midterm paper will be much easier to write without the hangover headache.
3. They are constantly spending money.
Now someone else's finances is not a reason to jump ship, but if you are constantly with them, odds are you are spending money like crazy. We tend to disregard the $9 for a movie ticket here or the $15 for go-kart rentals, but it all adds up. If you find yourself dreading what they'll want to do next, they are holding you back. Remember when you said you were saving up for that new hair straightener and it turned it seven trips to McDonalds?
Now all these factors even combined do not make your friend, significant other, or whomever this person may be a bad person. Sometimes we need to consider the long-term effects of how others influence our habits. The people we chose to keep close affect our everyday lives a bit more than you might think!
